Late 60's I was in the Chukkas with a friend just hanging out. There were two good looking girls sitting together. All of a sudden one leaned over and stuck her tounge in the other girls ear.
I almost fell off my stool. They soon left the bar arm in arm. Best bar in T-town in that day
genuinely cool story

Just heard that all this started at Horny's and made its way outside. I wish that place would just get shut down. Nothing but trash goes there and it is probably the worst bar in the city.
That shite hole was better off as its incarnation as Bama Dogs, and the owners are idiots to change what they had going. I don't know anyone who is impressed with that place's attempt at being a bar.

RIP The Chukker.
I didn't really appreciate Egan's until after I graduated, but I was there in the 90's when thd strip wasn't all commercial. All the bars were shady and dirty, and drugs were plentiful. And you could go out in shorts, a tshirt, and Birkenstocks.
:oldmanpost:
I feel like and old man too in that regard. I realize they are trying to clean up the Strip and even downtown but some of the absolute best Tuscaloosa bars are gone.
I miss The Old Train Station (my favorite bar), The Ivory Tusk, and The Booth (original location)
BTW, anyone remember the downstairs room in the Old Train Station?

Not reading this whole thread but has it been stated that this was Bama players vs. Stillman players?

Is that the place the fb players hung out at? I kind'a remember going to a bar which you crossed the train tracks to get to?
Some things from that far back are somewhat fuzzy..

I was at Alabama in the mid 90s. You may be thinking about either Harry's (home of the Crazy Bucket) or the place that I can't think of the name of that's just barely across the railroad tracks near the 15th Street viaduct.
Short answer is no. The Old Train Station was downtown near the Bank building near the intersection of Univ and Greensboro (tallest building downtown). If you're going from The Strip on Univ Blvd towards downtown you get to the intersection with the tallest building and turn right. The Old Train Station was on your right as you start going down the hill. If you've been to The Copper Top, 4th and 23rds, or Mellow Mushroom it's just down the hill on Greensboro Avenue from there. In fact, if it was still open it would be within walking distance of the RV lots overlooking the large bridge overpass near the new ampitheatre for any LSU fans that parked their RVs there LSU/Bama weekend.
The Ivory Tusk was located almost directly from the Univ Blvd entrance to Publix and the original Booth was on the main intersection that Phil's is on.

Absolutely loved the International Deli. Miss it terribly as well. That whole section of the Strip use to be wonderful. You had the Booth, Vinyl Solutions music store, The Cycle Shop (name?) which had awesome T-shirts and long sleeve T-shirts and bikes obviously, International Deli, Ivory Tusk, and Egans all within a 40 yard stretch.

I personally like The Strip now, as opposed to when I was an undergraduate and graduate student from 2001-2006. I like the growing bar district Downtown and in Temerson Square.

Didn't they open back up at one point as the Cotton Club?

You and I were were in school around the same time.
The Cycle Path was the bike store name.
Don't forget The Varsity and Quik Snak.
And OMG the turkey sandwiches at Tut's.
My sorority sisters and I used to got to The Sidetrack after the other bars all closed when we wanted to still dance.
Was that the same bar that used to get around the Sunday blue laws with the whole "we are a private club" thing? You could become a "member" for like $10 and get away with serving "members only" on Sundays.
