It still wasn't as depressing as J.B. Whitworth's 4-24-2 record, as my grandfather could attest to. I mean, Fran did come in and win 17 games in two years after Dubose. So, at least in terms of the roster he didn't destroy the program.

And it's not like Whitworth destroyed the roster either. In Bryant's first year we were competing hard and would have gone to a bowl game had the bowl game that invited us offered the players gifts that bowl games usually hand out to the teams. Bryant refused the invitation when he found out they would not do that. And also...Fran wasn't a bad coach. Had the Albert Means scandal never happened I think he would have been successful. I doubt he would have won a national title but he would have had us competing consistently for conference championships.
