My two cents:

1) Roof was asked to look for a job and found one. It was a courtesy by Chizik to not flat fire the guy and put that stigma on him again.

2) TJ Yeldon had been recruited continually by Bama. They never gave up and he never gave them a reason to. He saw the "past two guys to play RB for Bama have been (or will be) 1st rounders" pitch as being believable and feels he can make that same type of impact. Doesn't hurt that his best friend is an EE commit at Bama and has stayed on him about going to Bama together/rooming together. That said, I do believe Luper has made a couple of statements in the past few weeks that bugged TJ.

3) here's where I put on my flame suit b/c I know it will be hot in here in a minute. Malzahn and Chiz have had several small issues all season. Malzahn didn't expect it to change next year and he also was beginning to believe the only way he'd get the job he wants is to prove himself as a HC somewhere. My personal opinion based on a few conversations is that he felt it would have been ideal to wait another year, but he & Chiz had reached a point that it was just time for Gus to go (still Gus' decision, unlike Roof).

4) AU fans will not agree with me, but Gus can't stand Trooper. The only coaches on that staff that can are Luper & Chiz (to a lesser degree). Trooper has feelers out to 3 schools (A&M, Miami, and UNC). If he can get an offer he's gone. That will help staff harmony as well.

5) Stoops had genuine interest in the AU job (for 1 year). He and Jimbo don't get along great and it would have been a good out for him. However, something happened in his one-on-one with Chizik that made him change his mind.

6) AU will still hire a very good OC & a very good DC. They'll still recruit at a top 10 level and will improve next year.

ETA: Dyer is not just a failed drug test, but also horrid grades and attitude issues. Props to Chiz for taking a stand.

The one year part would've sealed it for me.... rent-a-DC is not a game we need to play... not with the youth we have on D.... we need someone who can give us a solid unit in 12, and have them playing lights out in 2013... that's not gonna happen if stoops leaves after next season.

Honestly, I hope so, and I mean that very sincerely. I would like to Auburn be a 9-3 or 10-2 type school every year with one of their losses coming to LSU, obviously. I want them to be competitive and for us to beat them in good, hard fought games. I want the same for Alabama.

It doesn't do any of us any good to see Auburn go 7-5 and get blown out in the 5 losses.

I find it amusing that Bama fans always seem to know more about the Auburn athletic department than Auburn people do.

To add to this, although they had a good professional relationship, I've read in a couple of places where scheme-wise, Grimes and Gus were not very compatible. This likely made Gus's decision easier. Grimes has a fair amount of respect and influence on the staff.

Also true. I think Chizik did what he had to do with his initial hires, and that is get the talent level up, above all else. He's beginning to see two things, IMO 1) Although he's one of the best recruiters around, TT becomes less of a coach and more of a cheerleader during the season, to the detriment of our WRs and 2) it's possible to recruit well and also be a quality on the field coach.

I think once they started talking nuts and bolts of their defensive philosophies, Chizik realized the two of them were not on the same page and that he better look elsewhere. He didn't want Roof, part II. The feeling was probably mutual. I think he is also looking for some continuity and it is well known that Stoops thinks he is ready to be a HC.
