This is the whole reason for the NCAA discussing new wording to close the loophole. I refer the case of Cecil and Cam Newton that showed the limitations of your statement. Welcome to the discussion.

quote:Well, I was speaking more about facts not your opinion. No matter how fascinating and rock solid you find it.
Recruiters arent stupid, they rarely get blindsided (though it does happen). A situation this big (player dad asking 180k) Auburn certainly knew about.
quote:First, they haven't repeatedly said that about parents. Second, their protocol would have been to determine what extra benefit might have been given and made the player repay it in order to be reinstated. If no benefit was given, then it is entirely likely that Cam would have been reinstated before the season. Of course, they may have suspended him for a game or two. Pretending to know for sure is silly.
ncaa would have followed their own protocol, (where they have repeatedly said the parent is an extension of the athlete) and suspended Cam for 2-4 games for trying get money out of state.

Like how Ingram and Julio were suspended for the opening game against VT because they got a free fishing trip?
That protocol?

Sure do...what did Cecil get?
Doesnt have to get anything.

Dont answer that...i dont want to get banned for arguing with someone fascinated with rumors.
Nothing to do with it. Ncaa, before this , has repeatedly said parent=athlete. Or dont you get that?

agree with you and the timeline matches up very well to support it
I wanted to believe that you bought him out from under us but the evidence just isn't there to support it anymore. It is a lot easier to blame another school for him not being your QB than to accept the fact that some people that were once affiliated with State are the real ones that f'ed it up for us. At any rate, I am glad that Mullen did the right thing and kept us in the clear.
ETA: But do I believe Cam knew he was being shopped to State? Oh yeah... But that will be impossible to prove sort of having him on video...
And as far as State being reluctant to follow up with further evidence... I know everybody thinks Mullen is an a-hole but I honestly believe Mullen didn't want to see Cam dragged through this. I feel that is why we were slow to provide any further evidence. Mullen has never spoken anything but praise for Cam and although the school told Cecil they didn't want any part of what he was trying to pull I feel Mullen left it at that and didn't want to provide any furter ammo against him.

What if your mom asks for a job in exchange for your commitment to TN, but is rejected by TN. Should you sit out if you then go to Bama? I don't know the answer, but it isn't as simple as you are pretending it to be.
yes, it is. until now, the ncaa has told everyone, coaches, compliance etc. that the parent = athlete.

The answer to the ineptitude of the NCAA.
Your grasp and depth of knowledge of what happened, and what everyone knew is amazing. I don't know how this issue has not been resolved when all anyone had to do was come and ask you.

Quit being delibrately obtuse. There ws no "loophole" until the ncaa made one in this situation. Every coach/complinace officer before this knew parent=athlete.

Not to mention the coaches and compliance people at AU did not have any known questionable dealing with the parent (that we know of).

Actually, players have been allowed to pay things back before. Im not surprised you didnt know this. So yes, protocol was followed there. But a player trying deeibrately to brek rules, and very big ones at that????

What are talking about?
So you are saying that actually receiving benefits is less serious than a parent asking, but not receiving, benefits?
Seriously?

No it doesnt. This isnt a ruling of law. It is not illegal for me to sell my jersey for as much as i can get for it, it simpy violates ncaa rules. Law has nothing to do with it. But you already know this.

That has been enough per rules to warrant a suspension (by asking for beneits, he clearly agreed to recieve thm should they come his way). They didnt do it because it would have been an embarassment at that point.

No joke.
secfan123 knows more about the NCAA than the Prez.

"I said very loud and clear that I think it's absolutely a fundamentally wrong for a father to try to sell the services of his son or daughter to the highest bidder, to a university. We ought never to allow that to happen, but yet, having not anticipated that, we didn't have any rule or structure that said it was a violation of any of our rules. I found that grossly inappropriate that didn't have a structure in which we could say, 'No, you can't do that.'

Just some random girl at the MSU UF baseball game at State during Super Bulldog Weekend back in April. She kept looking at me so I took her pic, LOL! Yes, State has hot chicks too...

The argument here is that Cecil asked for extra benefits, not Cam. It's also been said that Cam didn't know what was going on.

Asking for extra benefits<<receiving extra benefits
