I wouldn't go that far. I think we'll be at least pretty good, 4-7 in the SEC. And with everyone on the 2-deep returning, we should be the best unit in the SEC in 2012, and possibly one of the best units in the nation
I agree... I think we're definitely in the top half of the conference. DEs will be as good as anyone -- Lemonier was a terror in the BCSCG, Eguea as a soph will be solid once again... and there's depth with guys like Ford, Sanders, and Bonomolo. DT is a concern, but the two starters have some experience and plenty of talent.

QB 8
RB 3
WR 6
OL 11
DL 9
LB 7
DB 11
ST 8
Coaches 3
the only one I really take exception to is DL... the rest are resonable assumptions based on what's returning.
Our DBs will be much better in 2011 IMO, but there's no way to know that based on 2010 and what's returning. T Bell is a All-SEC 1st team kinda player, Chris Davis is really gonna step up as a soph, mincy and rose are gonna get tons of PT as well.
I'm betting a CB group of Bell, Mincy, Davis, and Rose is better than most teams... the just lack experience.

Why don't results matter when it comes time to giving Knile Davis his due?
they do but T. Richardson is going to explode this year hence the ratings.

After reading the comments below, I can conclude that Phil Steele is an absolute fricking moron. OP, I want to thank you for providing us with this thread before I went and bought that good for nothing magazine. I would rather walk into on-coming traffic that read that sorry excuse of a magazine from another "football expert"...
he is alot better than any other magazine. You just don't like it because he thinks Auburn is going to need some time to readjust.

you just lost Fairley. I doubt that. Yeah Auburn has a bunch of young guys who played well when given the chance but there will be an adjustment period.

It's useful to familiarize yourself with players outside the SEC imho.

I know this, but D-line is pretty much the only position that Auburn has that I'm really high on. RB is the only other..

i'm just not sure the depth is there and with it being so young and unproven it's concerning on paper.

Young, yes. But there is depth, and they're all extremely talented. By the end of the season, and going into next season, it will be an outstanding unit. But I agree we can't reasonably put them in the top half for now, since they don't have that much experience

Steele overvalues experience, particularly on the line of scrimmage.
I've never understood why so many analysts assume that plugging in a talented freshman or backup to replace a departing veteran at the offensive skill positions will "provide a spark" but doing the same with other positions is a recipe for disaster.
Actually I do understand it - it's because they are too lazy and too strapped for resources to be able to do an accurate talent assessment of every roster position for all 120 teams so they take the shortcut of just looking at losses to graduation and juniors declaring for the draft
Experience matters, but in the end raw talent matters more. Four years ago Auburn had to put four guys on the o-line with no experience, including three true freshmen (a death toll by Phil Steele's standards) and our line ended up being better than the year before. The reason? Better talent and a hungrier work ethic...oh, and some chop blocks :)

because in most instances it's not a recipe for success. Rarely is the new player more talented than the old one without an adjustment period in between.

everyone just can't think objectively. I swear it's ridiculous. Even if he is right no one likes it when he says anything bad about their best team ever!!

unproven depth
they go hand-in-hand in today's college football.... just about anyone who is 2nd string and is providing depth has little experience. AU was an exception last year b/c of such a huge senior class... we literally had senior DTs as back ups, one junior and one senior starter. All four are gone.
but my point is, more than likely everyone's back-ups who are providing depth are going to lack in the experience department. With today's scholarship limitations and more and more departures for the NFL, it's almost unavoidable.

more depth I guess? Bolden is without question better than any back we have.
