Back in November, my husband decided he wanted to see the photos from the 1961 Alabama/ Georgia Tech game. He lived in Atlanta as a boy and he remembered the coverage from the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Alabama player Darwin Holt smashed Chick Graning in the face in that game. It was a serious injury and there was a lot of negative publicity for the Tide. I requested an interlibrary loan, but I'm still waiting on it. Don't know what spurred the notion, but he wanted a copy of the story and the photos.

I guess Coach Jordan was too busy to have his picture taken while he was landing on the beaches of North Africa.

And Sicily.

And Normandy.

The LSU stadium was using checkerboard endzones back in the 30's too. So Tennessee invented them?

I don't believe anybody claimed Tennessee "invented" checkerboard endzones.

Pardon me. It was Dickey's "brainstorm".

quote:

The checkerboard end zones were the brainstorm of former Tennessee coach and athletic director Doug Dickey. When Dickey took over as coach in 1964, he had the end zones painted with the checkerboards.

"I got the idea to use checkerboard when I saw it in a magazine, maybe in an ad," said Dickey, who is retired and living in Jacksonville, Fla. "The design caught my eye and I thought we needed to dress up the stadium.

saw him play a couple of times at in Jackson.

In the 70's every other year State hosted Bama and Ole Miss hosted LSU for a double header.

I was in Boy Scouts and used to usher games there just to get in free. We helped people find their seats and then went and sat on the grass in one end zone.

Musso was the man.

Did he have a son who played at Northwestern or was that Major Ogalvie(SP?)?

You would have bought one in Dallas if you had been around and had gone to that game back in the 60's.
