I'm a big fan. I used to frequent there quite often. Older crowd, but it is a piano bar after all.
They also have 25 cent wing nights and dollar pbrs, perfect combo.

Bama Smokehouse on Hwy 69 in Taylorville is better.

I love Old Taylor just outside Oxford. I've heard another place (ajax?) might be better, but for me you can't beat the experience at Old Taylor, the old building out in the country, drinking beer on the porch, and they usually have some old dude playing guitar in the back. I love it.
I love Old Taylor and Ajax like I love my own family, but those aren't hidden gems.

Stromboli's is the one thing Starkville has that I wish Oxford had.

It's been open for like two years, how could one "have frequented there quite often?"
I miss Murff's. It was the least pretentious place in Oxford. It didn't have the fratty pretense of the Library, the intellectual pretense of the Grocery, the hipster pretense of the Blind Pig, nor the townie pretense of Parrish's*. It was a "come on in, get a few beers, play darts, and leave" type of place, which Oxford needs. Their back porch was the best place to spend a lazy Summer afternoon.
*NOTE: I love all of those bars, but when I was not in the mood for that any of those types of atmostpheres, Murrf's was the spot.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Handy Andy yet. It might be well known in and around Oxford, but seemingly nobody outside of Lafayette County knows what it is. Their burger is great, as is their jumbo barbecue sandwich.
The gas station next to the police station, the BP with the "James Food Mart" sign on it, has the best pimento cheese and chicken salad ever. They sell it in little plastic tubs for a decent price, so it's perfect for makin sammiches or popping in some type of serving dish for the Grove.
A very underrated bar, IMO, is the basement of the Rib Cage. It's definitely a bit more rednecky than some other spots, but the beer's cheap and the bartenders don't mind a bit of rowdiness.
Panini's and Deli News both make awesome sandwiches, but most students hardly frequent either. I'd say that, to the average Oxonian, they're hardly "hidden gems" but, to Ole Miss students, they are.

What about the Chevron right off of the square? It has the best drunk food EVER. Chicken on a stick, chicken strips, crispedoes, pizza sticks. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

There's a line out the door and around the corner to that place every night. It's not a hidden gem.

There's nothing "hidden" about some of the Tuscaloosa places that Bama fans are mentioning. Dreamland? City Cafe? Chuck's Fish? REALLY?? The first two get shoved in everyone's face as a "must" for visitors.
When I think of hidden gems in Tuscaloosa, I think of Kozys and Evangelines which are 2 of the better restaurants in the entire state yet many locals and apparently many UA students have no clue the places exist. Both places are more in line with what you'd find in MUCH larger cities so apparently that is why you hear so little about them. However, they get very high marks from foodie snobs.
I agree with Nicks in the Sticks as a casual hidden gem. Very good steak and even better signature drink the Nickodemus.

This exactly how I felt about Murff's. +100

I agree with both. Also, Moe's BBq downtown is the best imho. As for bars, catch22 is my fav place. They have flavored vodka that they do themselfs.good stuff.

I've got to visit Oxford soon. Visited while in college several years ago (mid 90s) but never really got around town and was at a fraternity party. I've heard so many good things about the restaurant scene there.

Gallettes is an awesome bar IMO. And a lot of people wouldn't know where to find it.
