What's your take on UGA?

My first post here. I wanted to see what the rest of the SEC was thinking about UGA and Mark Richt. I am a big Dawgs fan but have become disillusioned with Mark Richt. Of course the Kool Aid drinking Homers on our fan sites, aka Disney Dawgs, want to crucify anybody that questions St Richt's leadership.
What do you guys think about where UGA is today and what direction do you see this program headed?

Mark Richt and Bobo are stale and predictable. Your top in state recruits see it, and are choosing to play for your conference rivals. I would be very depressed as an UGA fan in regards to the direction that program is heading.

You look at UGA's recruiting and you come to one glaring conclusion:
With that talent, the only reason UGA isn't winning the SEC is because the coaching is bad. Really bad.
The only question is whether the problems are at the top (with richt), or if the problem is the severely retarded assistant coaches that UGA has had on staff for a couple of years now.
If the defense rebounds big time under Grantham, that will tell us something.
The fact that UGA is going to be starting a freshmen QB doesn't help this year, and then next year they'll have to replace a ton of players from graduation and draft losses.
I think generally they are trending down, and as long as Saban and Meyer patrol the sidelines in the SEC, UGA isn't going to win anything. The fact that Auburn is back on the rise doesn't help either.

IMO georgia's primary problem for a while now has been there lack of a dominant defense. the offense at times has been absolutely sick, but aside from those couple of years with Pollack the UGA D has never really been something to be feared. I like Richt as a head coach, but he needs to do better with keeping in-state recruits and landing some big out-of-state guys in order to compete for NCs. His new DC hire was a good one.

Georgia = our oldest and most respected rival. Welcome to the Rant!

Firing Mark Richt would be the most retarded thing UGA could do right now. UGA has one of the top coaches in the country. He hasn’t won a championship but its coming. Book it!

Athens is the best SEC city IMO. Would not mind spending my law school years there at all.
Also,

and Mark Richt.
Les Miles without the overwhelming stupidity. The only way he will ever win a NC is if he backs into it. Although I do think that by the end of 2007 UGA was the best team in the country.

Welcome to the board.
I think Richt earned the right to remain the head man even if his devotion to his assistants was clearly a poor move. While he has no MNC in the case, his bad years are in line with the better years of the coaches we had prior. It is one of those "be careful what you wish for" scenarios.
I think that expectations for next season should be kept realistic, if we end up surpassing, outstanding, but we will probably have a frosh QB, a new defensive strategy without the players that were recruited to play in it, and outside of AJ, no real "superstar" on the roster. Ealey or Caleb or a number of others (Charles is my hope here) could emerge, but going in, there should be no illusion that this is a make or break year for Richt (unless of course we really tank in a Michigan type of way).
The following year will be where tough decisions might have to be made. If we can recreate the early 2000's buzz, and at least have our hats in the SEC/national discussion, good. If not, may be time to rethink.
The title, or lack thereof, is not something that keeps me awake at night. It took Bowden, Paterno, Osbourne, etc 20+ years to get one. It is keeping the program at a place that we have a realistic chance of getting to that level, and then not laying an egg when we finally have that shot.
All that said, I keep saying that if my son one day is being recruited, I would want like hell for him to play for a man like Richt. HOWEVER, that aura is only good for so much for so long.

Richt- sucks, wants to be on mission trips more than coaching college football.
Bobo- sucks, seems only play he knows how to call is the screen pass to Green
Damon Evans- sucks. to much of a puss to do anything about the apathay of the coaching staff.

Wow, I love this site. I feel freedom running through my veins. The banjo music has stopped playing and I am hearing honest praise and criticism. Fantastic to get a rivals perspective. I look forward to learning a lot more about the rest of the SEC teams. About all you get on the Homer Dawg Rant/Vent/Run sites is a bunch of tobacco spit and slobbering about what inbred rednecks everybody else's fans are.

If UGA fired Richt they would not attract any big name coaches they would have to go the Chizik, Dooley route to find a coach. Richt wins ten games a year and has won two confrence championships. What coach would want to coach there if that is not good enough.
Richt hasn't won the SEC in going on 5 years.
I think 4 years is the magic number for any coach at any of the big six SEC programs.
Even if Saban or Corch went 4 years without a SECC their seats would become hot.
Richt is the new Fulmer. You know he's never going to win it all, but he will win enough to where firing him will look bad.

Ritch is an OC away from being competitive in the SEC East. Mike Bobo has the greatest ability to waste great talent.

There are a lot of these types here as well. Only difference here is that you can say pretty much what you want without worrying of repercussions.
