With Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis looking increasingly unlikely to make it to next season, speculation has started on who his successor could be.
Back in July, Press-Register columnist Paul Finebaum wrote that he expected Urban Meyer to leave Florida for South Bend after this season. Florida Today columnist Peter Kerasotis echoes that thought, saying he expects Meyer to get the first call if Weis is fired.
Writes Kerasotis:
Notre Dame absolutely, positively phones him first. Meyer is the reason ND didn't wait until the end of the 2004 season to fire (Tyrone) Willingham. Florida had fired Ron Zook and the Irish were trying to beat the Gators to the dotted line.
"I wanted to go to Notre Dame," Meyer said in his biography, "but my family wanted to talk about going to Florida." Last December, Meyer said on the radio, "Notre Dame is still my dream job. That hasn't changed." Then, earlier this year, he said, "I'm not going to Notre Dame. Ever."
Whatever.
