TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama head baseball coach Jim Wells will retire from his position effective today and will be replaced immediately by assistant coach Mitch Gaspard, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Sources close to the program said UA Director of Athletics Mal Moore met with players Tuesday to inform them Wells is leaving. An announcement is expected later today. Tommy Deas and Andrew Carroll contributed to this report.
He was afraid of Paul Manieri and LSU. I liked Wells but I think he got a lot of pressure from the bammers since Saban's recent success and hiring of Grant. It was time for a change and more will come out in the next couple of weeks about how Mal is a tool and "Saban wanted him gone..." Anyway, Best of luck to Wells.

He was a good coach. I think LSU considered hiring him before the Smoke Experiment.

if he was pissed that baseball wasn't getting proper attention from the athletic dept. he should have learned a long time ago what the pecking order is and how baseball falls right behind gymnastics and softball.

During the late 90s I thought the Bama baseball program was on the verge of doing something really special. It never came to fruition. Why was Wells never able to build upon that success?
He had to go through LSU.
He failed. Then again, most do.
Sort of like what the LSU football team is going to start doing again after a one year slip up.

Very simple. His teams were not dominant or explosive enough.

I always admired Wells and his squads. I wish him well. His tenure at Alabama reminds me somewhat of Charlie Mac at LSU. Good, even great teams occassionally, but his old coach was in the same conference and was one of the best of all time, certainly of that era.
Three trips to the CWS is quite an accomplishment.Plus he had two more "national seeded" teams in '02 and '06. That 06 team lost a heartbreaker to eventual runner-up North Carolina.

Hold on. Alabama went out and offered Maineri the job (which obviously included a ton of money)and then immediately promoted the top assistant ?
Makes zero sense.

retires or told to GTFO ???
He wanted Gaspard to replace him last year, but the powers that be wouldn't do it, or so the story goes. So, Gaspard was brought back to Tuscaloosa as an assistant, and Coach Wells stayed on for one more year. Now, the reigns are handed over to Gaspard.

I actually knew we had a baseball team, but I didn't know the coaches name until they talked about him retiring on ESPN radio yesterday.

I think Jim Wells had had enough, his fire and passion seemed to have burnt out. I'm very excited about Gaspard taking over though. He was the top assistant in the '90s when Alabama had their best seasons, left to be the head coach at Northwestern St and when he came back a couple of years ago, it was presumably to be the "head coach in waiting." I don't believe for a second anybody else was considered, offered, or whatever else for the job. It was time for Wells to go, its for real this time, and I'm excited for the future of Alabama baseball.

I'm an LSU fan through and through, but I am really happy for Mitch Gaspard. Very good coach and a strong recruiter. He continues the trend of Northwestern State Coaches in the SEC (Wells, Van Horn at Arkansas, Cohen at Kentucky and then Miss. State, and now Mitch at Bama). Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
