Paul Mainieri made it clear from the moment he became South Carolina’s head coach last summer. Given that he was about to turn 67 years old, he didn’t have a long-term plan to get the Gamecocks back to their winning ways. He was coming in with a one-year plan to turn things around.

“I don’t see why we can’t compete for everything right out of the gate,” Mainieri said at his introductory press conference last June. “I didn’t come here to lose. I didn’t come here to be mediocre. In my opinion, Carolina baseball represents excellence. I think we need to win now

But while Mainieri came in with the right mindset, his first season on the job hasn’t gone the way he expected. With three weeks left to go in the regular season, South Carolina is on the outside looking in for the postseason with a 25-20 record.

quote:

Being a part of the SEC for so many years at LSU, Mainieri knew how difficult the league was. At least he thought he did

. “I had just underestimated the strength of the conference and how much better the conference has gotten in the last couple of years,” he said. “The players are so much bigger and stronger and more experienced, older. We just have not been able to match up in some cases with them.”

Good thing Ray Tanner hired this geriatric and gave him a massive buyout for no reason

PM should've just enjoyed retirement or been a consultant to a coach somewhere.

Most fans wanted Elander...with some wanting Landon Powell (for no good reason other than he played here). Paul was not anyones first choice, but figured to be better than just hiring Monte Lee, or another Kingston.

That said, I am not sure that anyone could have turned it around here in 1 year, but Elander would have been fun as hell. Now he probably will go to an MSU and be wildly successful

In the NIL era USCe needs to spend money on talent like every SEC school.

It's easy underestimate the conference when 10 of 16 teams are ranked and half of the league is in the top 15.

This…and Paul might actually have to leave his office to recruit

I thought it was a bad hire as Maineri seemed way past his prime to me. But I also thought the same about Calipari and he seemed to do a pretty good job at Arkansas. What do I know?

Recruiting is the big issue even with NIL

You still have to pound the pavement to do it and that was the biggest reason LSU started to slip

He delegated all recruiting to Nolan Cain while he and Alan Dunn refused to go out and do it themselves

Real question: how much recruiting do baseball coaches do on the road? I don't think it is at all like basketball and football.

Ray Tanner is dumb as frick for hiring Paul Maineri. This would have been a good hire a decade ago

Imagine not understanding Maineri wasn’t going to keep up with the younger coaches on the trail.

Carolina could have done way better than this.
