Insanity in college athletics is going to lead to empty stadiums/arenas within 5 years!

As a huge LSU fan all my life, I never thought the day would ever come that I would lose interest in LSU sports, but it's heading in that direction!
Over time, college fans are going to lose more and more interest in supporting their favorite team because when there is absolutely no loyalty by the players, fan loyalty is also going to wane and who can blame them.
Tennessee is a prime example. A couple of years ago, the Vols signed the top player in the country in QB Nico Lamaleava, which included an 8M NIL deal, and yesterday he basically gave UT the middle finger because they failed to meet his demand for more money. Just today, it was announced that the entire Baylor men's basketball team has now jumped into the portal and they will now have to go sign and entirely new team for next year.
At some point, something has to give or the future of college athletics is in serious trouble. The problem is the NCAA has gone to court several times on different issues and lost every time!
Regardless, those overpaid NCAA big wigs better quickly find a solution to stop this insanity or it could quickly find itself unemployed and signing up for food stamps!

Hiring a Chad Morris or John Pelphrey as coach emptied ours out pretty good. Winning brings fans no matter what. But I don’t like this situation either…

That was going to happen anyway. Gen Z doesn’t give a shite about sports.

This current model is unstainable

This! Big time! There's so many more forms and entities of entertainment now from 15+ years ago. Social media, a plethora of entertainment options (Netflix, Prime, etc.), casual sex from dating/hookup apps. People talk now about awesome TV shows like we did about sports 20 years ago. The world is just changing.

It didn’t have to change. It was the “the kids deserve to be paid” crowd. They got paid a lot - tuition, room and board, clothes, tutoring, etc.

Wait ll the uniforms start looking like nascar uniforms, isn’t Texas tech or ok state talking about putting players cash apps up after big plays or touchdowns

No problem, ESPN can pump in crowd noise, as long as your TV is tuned in, CFB is banking.

What was lost on the many, is only a very few college programs actually run in the black.
Many programs struggled before collective and nil models.
Now it's the wild West and it seeds cancer in the locker room and fanbase.
Imagine being the suckers who donated for Nico to be an investment into the future. Now there 6-7 figure donation is gone..... With no return at all .

I’ve definitely lost interest, not a deliberate choice just watch less. Basketball is definitely less of a draw for me outside of March. I still look forward to football saturdays if nothing else is going on. I’ve always enjoyed NFL, probably more so now as there is more continuity in the rosters. I can always find a villain or hero in any game for a rooting interest. Roster turnover has made college games less appealing for myself.

Exactly. No model no control. Every team is a different team year end and year out. Saturday’s in the fall used to be like a holiday. Sad.

It was destined to fly apart when coaches and admins started taking millions annually some 20-30 years ago, and they used the NCAA to keep making the football players “amateurs” so that they did not have to pay them what they were worth. The selfishness we are seeing now from some players and families is nothing compared to the greed and stupidity of the NCAA/coaches/admins.
It will be interesting to see how cases like this Iamaleava situation play out. If he ends up playing for less than he was getting at Tennessee that will be a good thing. Let the free market cause the corrections, no government intervention, then things will settle out in a few years.

I dont even think its the different forms of entertainment as the primary culprit
I think its the coddled parenting. Despite the country having a much larger population today, less and less kids play football. Parents are babying their kids and wont let them play sports, couldnt bare the thought of them getting hurt
Kids who dont play sports as kids, wont grow up to love sports

Won’t have to leave early to beat the traffic if you don’t go to the game in the first place

I don't disagree. But, football is a dangerous sport. I've known many doctors over the years that refused to let their kids play football.
