He averaged 10 wins a season while coaching the Tide from 1990-1996, leading them to a perfect 13-0 record and a national championship in 1992. Happy Birthday, Coach!

Good man, good coach.

Really didn’t deserve the treatment he got at Bama.

Look how he dressed for games compared to the way modern day slob head coaches dress.

Happy birthday, Coach Stallings.

He was an outstanding coach, but he’s an even better man. To begin to name all of the things that he has done for special needs children would fill up more words that I can give in hours. I don’t often recommend books, but I would encourage anyone and everyone to read Another Season, which is a story about Coach Stallings and his son, John Mark, and their journey through life together.

I have always had a great deal of respect for Coach Stallings for this reason:

As many of you know my grandfather played both basketball and football for the University of Alabama in the 1930s. Back when Coach Stallings was the head coach of Alabama my uncle brought my grandfather to campus to go walk through the Bear Bryant Museum, check out things on campus, and just enjoy spending time together in Tuscaloosa.

If memory serves me correct it was in the summertime. Well my uncle decided just to drop in unannounced on the football operations building so my grandfather could potentially have a look and check things out. Apparently Coach Stallings was in his office and found out that a former player from the 1930s was in the building. He invited my grandfather and Uncle into his office and they sat down and visited together for quite a while.

I know many of us have heard great stories about Coach Stallings and the kind of person he is - I just thought I would share this personal story about how gracious, kind, and considerate he was towards my grandfather that day.

Always good to tip the hat while they're living.

And not heard of until afterward.

He was one of my all time favorites even though not my school. I always liked Bear and he seemed just like him.
