Out of steam at the sweet 16 in the tournament. The SEC being as insanely difficult as it is this year doesn’t necessarily mean that history will repeat itself, but just to compare what surprises lie ahead in the random event like the NCAA tournament.

Just like we're now seeing in football, there's really no point in an intraconference post-season other than fun for the fans when you have a big NCAA tournament.

It'd be a big deal if only the champions of the tournament advanced, as it would make the conference tournament a de facto NCAA tournament, but it's not and therefore pointless.

At least in MCBB they get an Auto-bid.

Very pointless in CFB at this rate. They might as well base it off of SEC record and some tie-breaker.

And who wants that? Fans are a hindrance to the real goal of NIL and "meaningful" post season achievements. We probably shouldn't even let people be fans unless they meet at least six figure NIL contributions.

This article is talking about conference tournament champions right? Not regular season conference champions.

Correct. And what I gathered from the article is that if you want your team to make it to the final four and compete for a national championship, about the worst thing they can do is win their conference championship. It makes sense, playing that many games days before the NCAA tourney has to fatigue players. If your team has locked up a top 6 seed, then pull for your team to lose their opening game in the conference tournament. Then let the teams fight for an automatic bid battle it out.

Here is the winner of the last 12 SEC tournament championships, their NCAA seed, and what round they lost in the NCAA tourney.

2012: Vanderbilt, #5: 32
2013: Ole Miss, #12, 32
2014: Florida, #1 overall, 4
2015: Kentucky, #1 overall, 4
2016: Kentucky, #4, 32
2017: Kentucky, #2, 8
2018: Kentucky, #5, 16
2019: Auburn, #5, 4
2020; cancelled due to covid
2021: Alabama, #2, 16
2022: Tennessee, #3, 32
2023: Alabama, #1 overall, 16
2024: Auburn, #9, 64

In the past 12 tournaments, the SEC tourney champion exceeded their seeding 3 times. They matched it 3 times (i.e. #1 seed made final four, #2 seed made elite eight, etc). They performed worse than they were seeded 6 times.

It does appear that winning the SEC tournament is more likely to hurt a team than help them. None of the three #1 overall seeds during that period made the finals. It seems rest is more important than momentum.

Don’t worry, Arkansas will be well rested since we took the first half of the season off.

I would agree. Also seeks to be the exact opposite of the football playoff. Where the teams with the bye weeks all lost

They don't really get a bump in seeding either. That would be a strong motivator to win the tournament, but seeding is pretty much locked-in by the end of the regular season.
