5th most viewers of any game so far this season.

College Gameday at Auburn was the 2nd highest rated on-site episode for the program of the last 3 seasons.

Great publicity for the program.

For the sake of comparison, the USC-Connecticut women's game drew 2.2 million viewers earlier this season.

Just goes to show no one gives a shite about these teams. I’d rather watch a filibuster on C-SPAN than tune into an Auburn-Tennessee basketball game

CBB is a niche product now.

When was it not a niche product? When the best HS players went straight to the NBA? Or when players were one and done from a single school instead of being allowed to transfer?

Today's top teams would get skull dragged by the best teams from the 80s and 90s when the top talent was playing 3-4 years in college, and almost always in the same program.

That being said, it's still an enjoyable product to watch.

Cool. That doesn't mean it was more than a niche product. Outside of March Madness the general public doesn't care about the sport and never did. The bracket challenge aspect is the only reason anyone pays attention at all.

I know I am hating but I enjoy college basketball and wish that LSU was good but just like every college sport besides football, its a niche product and always has been.

Well that's just dumb. The most viewers for a college football game was 35.6 million. The most viewers for a college basketball game was 35.1.

Just because you prefer football does not make it a "niche" sport. There are more college basketball programs than college football programs.

when they stayed at least 3 years

Nobody cares now until the tourney. Gee, 9 SEC will get in, will we be a 7th seed or a 6th seed? compelling

Looking the viewership of the top game doesn’t decide whether or not it is a niche sport. What does viewership look like across the board?

Not just viewership, because that can be affected by who picks up the game, what else is on, etc. Just look at common knowledge amognst the general public. Casuals are much more likely to know football players on their team or other teams than basketball players.

Auburn is a top 3 team and I bet I could stand on the corner and ask strangers to name Auburns best players and 95% or more won’t have a clue. I bet these same people could name players on middle of the pack SEC football teams.

I’m not saying that CBB sucks, I’m saying that it is niche just like baseball (which I love) or any other college sport. I’m sorry that football is more popular but it just is.

Saturday was first time I’ve watched CBB in years.

It was 10x the product the NBA has become. You see a difference in talent yes, but the effort and defense is 10x better. It’s a lot more fun to see 3s only going in 30% of the time versus half court shots for 3/4ths of a game

I agree with this. Typically between November and March, there are only a couple dozen men’s basketball games to hit the 1 million viewer mark.

Meanwhile CFB routinely has 4-5 games each Saturday hit the 4 million mark with the top game often hitting 9 or 10 million.

By your flawed logic, every sport other than the most popular sport is a niche sport.

NFL football is much more popular than college football. I could argue college football is a niche sport, only certain areas of the country care about it.

Well... Most sports are niche...

Do you know what it means to be a niche sport? It means that its not common knowledge to the general public. That you have to seek it out. That you can't just casually talk about it with others because they most likely will have no idea what you are talking about. You can't get in an elevator and and say to a stranger "How about that Tennessee Auburn basketball game last night?" They won't know what the hell you are talking about. You can however talk about the iron bowl the day after and whether or not they actually watched, they most likely would have knowledge that the game exists and its between Bama and Auburn. Now of course there is always a segment of the poulation that won't have a clue about either but FAR more people will know about the Iron Bowl than the top 5 matchup in CBB.

Again, this idea that you are clinging to that college football isn't any more of a mainstream sport than college basketball is very flawed and it has nothing to do with my preferences. I like College baseball alot but I'm not gonna pretend that its mainstream enough to talk to strangers about.

99% of the U.S. population could not tell you who the participants are in the Iron Bowl.

You're bias for college basketball is showing.

I promise you a hell of alot more people could tell you the iron bowl participants than could name any players on either Tennessee or Auburn.

How many people do you think could name a player on Auburn's football team?

I couldn't do that if you asked me who was on Michigan's football team. Also, I would know Jeanty from Boise St, but nobody else on that roster.

Regionally I am in tune with SEC players in the big-3 sports. I am guessing there is an underlying regional bias in these conversations...

There were 2 other SEC games showing at the same time. Cannibalizing each other. The SEC deal with ESPN is awful. The BIg Ten has multiple OTA network broadcasts every week with very few games overlapping. They have done a masterful job in putting their product front and center.

Yes. This.

Outside of Auburn games, I’ve watched more BIG10 basketball this season than SEC because they have games on almost every day of the week.

This week alone:

Sunday- 3 games
Monday- 3 games
Tuesday- 1 game
Wednesday- 2 games
Thursday- 3 games
Friday- 1 game
Saturday- 4 games

Contrast that with the SEC who crams every game into just 3 days of the week, typically with 2-3 games scheduled in the same window.

It’s terrible.

Partnering with ESPN was an absolute disaster. Sankey needs to be working to end this deal early and partner with multiple networks in the future.
