Is this the way it's going to be, going forward?

What permanent opponent was announced even. Football?

I'd be okay with this.
Would stink not being able to play Tennessee every year, but its the only way to be fair..
Some of these schools trying to claim Arkansas, Missouri and Vandy as their rivals for that 5-3 model is just ridiculous.
Ya'll are not slick!

I revised the thread. I was getting a lot of different answers when doing Google searches on SEC scheduling.

Any chance they bring this thing back to Division format?

That's how you'd keep the rivalries, but I don't think anyone wants that.
I'd fine with 2 AUTO rivalry games(at most), but Schools like Alabama Possibly getting Auburn, Tennessee and the manufactured LSU "rivalry" automatically on the schedule plus in any given year drawing an Oklahoma and UGA (cough cough this year and next) is just not fair.
Especially when these SEC newcomers seem to try to claim Arkansas as their rivals (Texas TAMU Mizzou) and then at the end of the season act as if they went through the same SEC gauntlet as everyone else.
It's just so uneven, I hate auburn but they could possibly have to play Bama, UGA and Tennessee every year, and that doesn't stop them from drawing other really good teams for their remaining 5 games.
I'd be in favor of a 1 or 2 rivalry game automatic
OR give everyone 3, and do a non random draw for the remaining 5
(AKA teams that get easier rivalry games have higher chances of drawing good teams, Instead of the 5 game draw being completely random)

It makes no fricking sense that the two schools who have played each other every year since forever and are the two closest schools in the conference didn't play each other.

LSUs most played opponent is Mississippi State. We let greed take over rivalries/games regional fans cared about. Its over.
But at least the forced LSU Oklahoma "rivalry" gets TV people in suits aroused.

Nice fun fact about MSU/LSU. The average fan wouldn't know that

Tenn/Bama, Oklahoma/Texas, LSU/A&M (etc) going away is a net loss for CFB.
Divisions again is the answer.

The easiest problem to fix is the night game discrepancy and how many teams you face after their bye week.
No team should have to endure a season without hosting at least one night game.
Meanwhile, top programs shouldn’t be forced into more road night games just because it’s the other team’s “Super Bowl.”
It’s these kinds of easily solvable issues... plus Greg Sankey’s refusal to even attempt a fix... that make it clear he needs to go.

Well, Oklahoma and Texas wouldn’t go away with a one-rivalry format.
LSU and Texas A&M wouldn’t either... but only because Texas would still get Oklahoma as its rival.
Losing Texas vs. Texas A&M and Alabama vs. Tennessee would be a huge blow for college football, which is exactly why the SEC will never switch to a single perm rivalry.
My question is... which teams would go into each division? The West was already much tougher, so would the SEC Championship still be East vs. West? With 16 teams now, the chances of the two best teams being in the same division are even higher than before. We’ve already seen seasons where the top SEC teams (like Auburn/Alabama or LSU/Alabama) never got to match up in the SEC Champ.
Seriously though I want to hear your opinion on this...
How would you split the divisions, and how would you decide who goes to the SEC Championship?

Arky would love LSU so they would have a chance of winning every now and then instead of their annual arse kicking by Mizzou. I would hate not playing South Carolina each year as those games have been pretty damn fun every year.

16 teams- 4 divisions
Southwest division aTm, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas
Old South Division Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Miss St
Mountain South division Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, Vandy
Seaport South Division LSU, Florida, UGA, SCar?
Protected cross division rivalries:
-UTK/Bama
-UGA/Barn
-UTK/FLA
-Bama/LSU
Each team plays everyone else in their division and then 2-2-1 from the other divisions if the conference sticks to 8 games. If it goes to 9, then 3-2-2-2

I'd do a direct split with an assumption that it's just a trial run. Evaluate and then if necessary, deviate from course.
The whole "play it by ear" approach
As far as the Ok/Tex/A&M dynamic goes: The Lone Star Showdown will be a bigger draw moving forward than the RRR, imo.
No way does A&M and Texas not play every year.

I understand your point but A&M and Arky played annually for very many years before both joined the SEC.
There is a lot of history in that series. And it is annually one of the more entertaining games of the year.

As a Vols fan I feel like we have always had the hardest schedule in the SEC.
Ala Ga Fl plus the other draws we receive.
Sure Fla has been just like us but Ga never has to play Fla in the swamp.
Fla even when they suck give us fits and even wins 99 percent of the time.
But I like having these games. Because when we beat bama and Fla we usually have a great season.
10 win seasons are great especially now during nil.
Other conferences have taken talent that normally would be warming a bench here in the SEC.
Until changes are made to nil don’t expect any 1 or 2 teams to be dominant anymore.
Big 10 top schools spent a lot more money than most of the SEC schools.
Tenn spent somewhere between 11 and 14 million. And we looked foolish against OSU.
In the meantime coaches are getting incredible raises and bonuses.
Phil Former made 2 million a year I think and that was with. Natty.
