Can't imagine coaching with this shite NIL and portal garbage.

Nick Saban says hello

He's not wrong. Those who love to coach are not always those that just want a paycheck. If coaching is no longer enjoyable, why do it?

I call BS. The mid majors aren’t struggling or paying out the arse for talent.

He’s spot on. Glad he’s speaking out in a clearly honest and genuine way. The current model is totally broken.

Old man quits on his team mid season because some 20 year olds quit on his team after the season…

It is also worth noting that he's in the middle of a disastrous season. If they were winning he wouldn't be doing this. His seat was warming a bit.
ETA: And it wasn't long ago that he said he felt great and hadn't given any thought to retiring.

Actually....
Old man quits on his team mid season because some 20 year olds quit on his team after the Final Four after having observe him quit on his former university for money after a Final Four.
It's actually pathetic.
He quits on George Mason after a final four for more money and better opportunities then bashes the players who helped him take Miami to a final four for leaving for money and better opportunities.
What a douche.

It’s complete garbage. Restrictions have to be put in place. Allow NIL deals with enforceable contracts that require the player to remain at the team a certain number of years, require participation in postseason play, financial penalties for breaking the contract, etc.
And limit the transfer portal to players only allowed 1 free transfer. After that, you must sit out a year and lose a year of eligibility if you transfer again or burn a redshirt to keep the eligibility. Exception will be if team undergoes coaching change.

This. The players need to be employed by the schools with a contract with reasonable teams.
As is everything is completely one-sided in favor of the players.

What’s he complaining about? NIL for basketball 5 stars? The mid majors are talent rich with no NIL funds. He’s at a P4, that isn’t a basketball school. What does he expect. Playing the NIL victim?
His best teams were made up of 5-7 23 year olds on the roster he poached from other teams. He isn’t clean in the hired mercenary game.

When we look at it like this for what it is he really doesn’t have a good argument. It’s ok for me but not for you. Not a good look.

No, I think he's right.
If his determining factor was what happened after last season, he should have quit before this season started.
He's quitting mid year on his team.

He coached at Bowling Green 12 years, George Mason 15 years, and is in his 14th year at Miami. He put in considerable time at every one of his coaching stops. He also signed contracts at each one of those stops that had clauses that dealt with leaving in the middle of the contract. With the current NCAA model, there is no contract. There are no guidelines whatsoever. Trying to compare the two is very short-sighted and ignorant.
It’s also relevant he’s 75 years old. He very likely doesn’t have it in him at his age to deal with the recruiting complexities that come with recruiting D1 sports any longer, especially considering the system has been flipped upside down, quickly, the last few years.
I don’t know why you think what he said was pathetic. He’s telling you he’s exhausted and doesn’t want to do the job anymore. He’s also not wrong that college athletics has become professional athletics.

NIL and open transfers is going to drive all the hardline a-hole coaches out of college sports.
As a coach, you now need to get you players to WANT to play for you. Some aren't going to be able to do that or don't want to. They preferred a system where even if the player didn't really want to play for them anymore, there would be a lot of pressure on them to stay (having to sit out a year being the main one) as opposed to there being pressure to leave (big money NIL deal).
I personally never liked playing for a-hole coaches. Some of my favorites were strict, but they were all likeable and "good people". Bobby Knight always was an arse. Great at coaching the game... but an arse. That no longer flies. I don't think that's a problem.
Saban worked fine. He was strict but not an arse.
TLDR... if you're not an arse you'll be fine coaching today.
