If you were there in Bama gear, I probably high fived you at some point. Apologies if it was next to you at the urinal. The composure and grit they showed last night is encouraging. It’s clear we still don’t have a consistent personality as a team. Sears trying too hard to facilitate instead of dominating early to take pressure off the young guys. Flat chemistry with a lot of the lineup. But we saw shades of old Sears at the end.
The refs were objectively awful. Tugler should have fouled out in the first half. Every screen he set was either sticking his leg and hip out, or putting hands on our guy and giving a little shove. We finally started hedging on screens more in the second half and that made a difference.
Mo
Houston fans aren’t the worst, but it’s not for a lack of effort.
The logistics and feel of the event is kind of…sound stage cheap? Like eating at the Cheesecake Factory. You want it to be a little fancy, but it’s just not.
This will continue to be the crowd size for events like this until we figure out how to disincentivize buying up tickets the moment they go on sale just to jack up the price and have them sit on stubhub for a few months.
Side note: Dylan Harper is fun to watch.

Hope Dylan Harper is a bit less exciting tonight.

Obviously not a full arena, but I was impressed with the amount of Bama fans there. You guys were loud last night especially in the 2nd half.
Hearing Sweet Home Alabama playing on the loudspeakers at the end of the game was pretty sweet!

Even if he is, we have to account for Bailey. He had an off night but could easily be a problem. Thankfully, I doubt Philon struggles again as badly as last night.

Philon never experienced NCAA sanctioned prisonball before...I think you're likely right...

Lurkin and workin, my brother. Doing good except my eyesight is worse and everything hurts when I wake up in the morning. In the final stages of securing a new gig that will finally bring me back south.
But right now, mostly just trying to keep my 15 year old son from taking pamphlets from strangers on the Vegas strip.
What have you been up to?

The officiating ruined any semblance of flow or offensive rhythm in that game. It was like watching an early 2000’s Big Ten game.
As for Sears I have a little sympathy in this one because he was playing an extremely physical team who plays outstanding team defense when allowed to body guys as they were. Both their length and defense made it next to impossible to dribble drive effectively. I thought he did a good job settling the team late and his three pointers were crucial.
Reid and Diaboute were the key IMO. Reid in particular locked down their only offensive threat and with their complementary players finally fouled out they didn’t have anywhere to go in OT.

I thought Holloway was just as crucial as Mo last night. The offense was kind of stagnant until he came in. I’ll be shocked if there’s ever a point this year that he isn’t the fastest player on the court. He got up and down, made great pass/shoot decisions, and really moved the ball at lightning speed when he got it on the perimeter. His decisiveness and decision making, Houston just couldn’t keep up.
Houston games are a pain to watch, but Tennessee and Auburn play a similar style so it’s a good early litmus test. Grant Nelson is probably still in the ice bath.

I may have been a little quick to relegate Holloway to a limited role this year. After the first few games I thought it was clear that Holloway would eventually get limited minutes and would be the distant 5th guard behind Sears, Philon, Wrightsell, and Youngblood. But now I don’t know. He may be hard to keep off the floor. He has impressed the last couple of games, particularly last night. Philon wasn’t quite ready for what teams like Houston bring, but Holloway stepped up huge. And his defense is better than I thought it would be.
When Youngblood gets back the battle for minutes among those 5 guards is going to be interesting. Will probably be a lot of “go with the hot hand this game” going on.

Luckily we play a fair bit of 3 guard lineups, so I think there are some configurations with Youngblood at the 3 spot and some combo of Sears, Holloway, and Philon at 1 and 2.

The city of Las Vegas ought to give the tickets away to each teams fanbases.
They would reap a large amount of revenue from visitors to the city.

I agree. And there’s zero fan experience activities. Such a huge opportunity, largely wasted. I’m glad the teams are getting the NIL money but this could be so much more than it is.

yep. He is a facilitator. Great hard-nosed win last night.

All the young guys (second 5) played a big role last night.
Some didn't play a lot of minutes but what turned the game to our favor was the big 2nd half run when we notched up defensive pressure and it really got Houston rattled -- 3 or 4 turnovers, 2 different timeouts.
The lineup which did that was: Reid, Dioubate, Philon, Stevenson and 1/2 Trelly/Holloway.
Even though Philon had trouble finishing in the prison yard and neither he nor Stevenson knocked down perimeter shots, they were crucial to that 2nd half run.
It's a nod to our depth and also Oats figuring different lineups for situations with that depth that our biggest push of the game came from taking out Grant, Cliff and Sears and going with the most athletic defenders possible.

I see my fave non Bama coach Darrian Devries has led WVU to a win over Gonzaga. Drake won a tourney title as well.

Let me remind you that this is the first event of its kind. Calm down just a little.
It's not going to be PERFECT at all.
