Batoon brought him in as an analyst and he magically became the safeties coach when the number of on field staff expanded. The coverage busts by and large are because of his room. Burks got benched in the second half and has looked completely clueless at times. They are the least assignment sound group on the team. Corey better coach his guy up or they will be using the same real estate agent and moving company.

The group seems to have a least one busted play for a TD per game. And by busted play I mean one where even a casual fan says “what hapoened?”

Burks needs to redshirt and gain some weight and play LB. The kid can hit, has decent speed, but he can't help but to stare into the backfield when playing safety and receivers or TEs run right past him. You know they have been preaching this since the BC game and he still does it. He can't help himself.

I think you are being too nice. I think it is more in the 10-15 or even higher range. The DL covers up quite a few so they go unnoticed.
EDIT: Sorry, i missed your "for a TD" part of the post. Yes, I agree. It costs us at least one easy TD per game and is really aggravating and we are lucky it isn't more.

I can live with a greedy safety, but that isn't what I'm seeing. Burks has looked like he doesn't understand secondary play keys. If you don't get it, you give ground and keep reading. He has been flat footed with a receiver running right by him. It's been worse on the road for some reason. He's got all the tools.

The Boston College TE touchdown wasn't a mis-read or lack of understanding. He literally stood, watching Castellano, and the TE ran right by him. And the TE wasn't very fast.
I believe it happened again vs OU where you could see him just focused on the QB and oblivious to the WR. But when he comes up to support the run his tackles are solid, he takes good angles and he hits hard. I honestly think he would make a great LB instead.

It's more than the busted plays (and yes those SUCK by themselves) but the players are rarely set when the opposing team snaps the ball.

Every defensive coordinator has nuances but as the boundary run force he's reading the guards pad level, QB eye level and the RB. Analyzing the guard action stirs the drink and you have 3 backslides to make it all happen. Carlies was usually in the right spots and tackled very well. He was a good college safety but he is playing LB in the league for a reason. Burks is a better all around athlete but doesn't read the play like Carlies. I expected more consistent play from him. He's had 3 double digit tackle performances in SEC play and then he has games like aTm, OU, and South Carolina where he's out of position and gives up a chain moving throw or a TD.

And Boston College and Vanderbilt.
