Lane Kiffin on the SEC championship game: "The conference championship could have a big impact both ways. I've talked to some other coaches, and the feeling is that they don't want to get in it. The reward to get a bye (in the playoffs) versus the risk of getting knocked out completely....is a really big risk."

The committee would set an unbelievably bad precedent in year 1 of this format by leaving out the SECCG loser.

The only SECCG loser I could see them leaving out is Texas A&M w/ 3 losses.
Bama & Georgia get in with 3 losses and Texas gets in with 2 losses as long as they have the win over A&M and are in the game.

Really going to suck when you lose two or three playmakers in the meaningless game.

Lane Kiffin said that or Brian Kelly?
Lane takes every risk and Kelly takes none.

Lane isn’t going to the SEC CG regardless if he could or not
He’d also be the biggest beneficiary of what he’s saying because he’s on the bubble.

a lot will depend on which two teams make it and how competitive the game is
I would not want to get blown out in the title game as the risk of someone passing you up sitting at home increases
then again, other then a bye, what motivation would an undefeated team like Oregon have at this point when you could potentially rest players and get a home game instead

Wonder if every player from both teams could opt out of game? The SEC would be forced to get rid of game.

This is soft. Just play the game.

You saying uga wouldn’t have gotten in a 12 team playoff last year?

If most coaches really want out and their AD's follow their lead, the presidents may vote to end it.
I say, just use whatever math to find the top 2 teams to just find the top 1 team and crown a regular season champ. That or throw dice, spin a wheel, cast lots, whatever... that game is more of a burden now than it is a benefit.

I'm saying they were the best team in the country last year, ran the table in the regular season, lost by 3 in the SEC CG and got left out of the then 4 team playoff.

quote:The injury risk alone is not worth it. Why don't the schools just band together and give the SEC office a few million to cancel it. That way the SEC still gets their money and the teams don't have to waste their time. They playoffs may even be able to get started a week sooner as well.

Would the CFP committee punish a team for skipping a championship game?
Untested waters, but can a team pass on the chance to go to CG. Not sitting players, just letting next team down go.
The committee is setting precedent so far this year, SOS does not matter. They are passing favor unto losses, or lack thereof. The fact there is a discussion of Boise at 4, ND even as an option and upwards of 4 Big10 teams getting in is not a good look.

Right. Apples to oranges. It’s no longer 4 teams. A losing team in SECCG isn’t getting left out. Only way that happens is if the losing team already had 3 losses going into the SECCG.

It depends on the context of the game. If the game is competitive and not an embarrassing blowout then they should get in. But if the loser gets the brakes beat off of them then no way they're getting in. I suspect how they handle the loser this first time around will heavily dictate the future of conference championship games.
