SEC officials would NEVER engage in chicanery of any kind. I refuse to believe it.

Kind of reminds me when Doyle Jackson was the head official at an Alabama / Ole Miss game that screwed us out of a win. Later that season, he was presented an award at an Alabama game as he was an alumni.
As long as they don't officiate games in which the team they love is involved, it is acceptable but they should never officiate one in which the team they love is involved.

I am not sure why the SEC can’t find officials who didn’t go to SEC schools. The cost of flying officials in from other parts of the country is minimal vs regularly having to deal with accusations of impropriety.

(And I like Shaw, he was a good ref overall).

actually in these days with the way social media is in real time I don't think those officials want to look incompetent after every game
officiating is a lot harder in real time then it looks sitting back watching it on tv
those officials want to get it right as much as they can but it's an impossible job sometimes with all eyes that magnify your mistakes
Some penalties could be fixed via review if they really wanted to but then the games slow down even more

Speaking of, did the SEC ever attempt to justify the outcome of this play? It seems as though there was some massive confusion over who denied what penalty, DeBoer was out on the field for a really long time, and for whatever reason no one appeared to even address the potential turnover part.

I'm not sure why the SEC can't make officiating a professional part of the business organization. Having guys that work a normal Monday - Friday at a job somewhere then come ref somewhere on Saturday is simply inexcusable considering the money this league brings in hand over fist.

What kind of stuff would these guys be doing during the week? During the week in May?

Practicing being officials. It is clear the current batch could sure use it.
SEC sports generated $853 million in net revenue (profit) last year; $51 million was distributed to each school. The last year I can find numbers just for football was 2021, and SEC football generated over $1.1 billion in gross revenue that year. It is undoubtably higher now. SEC football is a billion dollar business. And the game day operations are essentially being run by seasonal employees working a second job.

film review, study sessions, practice games, professional development, etc. I'm sure there's a shitton of stuff they can do job-related during the season. Nobody is saying they need to pull 12 hour days but I mean ther'es plenty to do in a 4-day week assuming they travel on Fridays.

Chill out and enjoy their time off? Regular football players get the summer off from games too.
My biggest problem si that we treat these frickers like an afterthought as some kind of joe blow off the street yet their job is enormously critical. Pay them handsomely, give them all the trainin and support they need, and attract top quality people. Refs are going to get things wrong at every level that's simply human nature but man college refs are so absolutely awful and there's zero accoutnability. They can frick up so monumentally it defies all logic and reason and then it's neve rmentioned again. No public reprimand, no demotions, no suspensions, nothing. Just "oh well on to the next week".
