Alabama has got to get better on 1st down. Particularly when they decide to run. However, we had a 1 or 2 of 2nd-and-on-schedule downs that got wiped because of a procedural penalty. The combination of penalties and production is putting the offense in a bind on 2nd and 3rd down.
QBs like Tua, Mac, and Bryce could drag our asses out of these quagmires but it has really been an issue since 2021. We've got to be one of the most hit or miss offenses on 1st down. We're either hitting big plays or getting off-schedule due to lost yards or ineffective yardage gained. And again, really been like this for 4 seasons now.
Part of the problem is we're not running CKD's true offensive system. He stated earlier last month he would have to wait until next season to install 90% of his offense. We're doing similar to what Tommy Rees and staff did last season and that's run plays that J Milroe runs best and going with that. CKD's offense is built around timing and anticipation, which, unfortunately, is not one of JM's strengths. I don't want to get into a "then why isn't Ty Simpson playing" discussion because it's unproductive. But we're not running CKD's offense that he ran at UW and until we can run that we're just calling plays that JM runs the best. It is very hard to get into an offensive rhythm that way.
