Instead of turning for a back shoulder reception Smith tried to push off the defender. The defender held his ground and prevented Smith from turning and caught the ball. All the blame is on Smith.

I agree that Smith likely ran a bad route.
Based on where Beck threw the pass it looked like it should have been down and out to the sideline.
But Smith was well covered and Smith was not even looking for the ball when the pass was released so from an objective perspective, the pass should have never been thrown.
And I get that some pass plays call for throwing to a spot.
The obvious problem with those plays is the route can easily be disrupted and you end up throwing to a defender instead of your receiver which is exactly what happened with that pass to Smith.
Considering the number of turnovers we have had so far this season, if I'm Beck's QB coach, I tell him to only throw right to the body of open receivers who are looking for the pass.
And if he can't find an open receiver down-field, throw an outlet to a RB or TE (and there should always be a short outlet), run the ball if there is an opening or dump the ball out of bounds over the receiver's head.
And finally, too often I have seen Beck throw high and hard or behind his receivers on short passes.
And yea, the receiver might be able to get his hands on the ball but these type of inaccurate passes are much more likely to be intercepted.
When your receivers are struggling, throw the dang ball right to the chest of the receiver aka make it easy for them to make a catch.
