If the season ended today (and the CFP poll was the same as the current AP Poll), the 11th and 12th ranked teams wouldn't make it.
Get into the top 10 to be sure.
Get into the top 10 to be sure.

Tip #2 for the Day
Want to win the game? Make sure to score more points than your opponent.

I'd say Top 9 is guaranteed.
If 10-2 BYU beats 11-1 Kansas State in the Big 12 CCG, they likely won't be Top 10, but they'll be in the playoff.
If 10-2 Clemson beats 12-0 Miami, they likely won't be Top 10, but they'll be in the playoff.
The G5 Champ is not likely to be in the Top 10.
Maybe that isn't likely to all happen, but when it does, shite will hit the fan. I'm thinking some 2 loss SEC and B1G teams might get left out this year if the cards fall right. Unless there are some changes made, I think big OOC games will be going away sooner than later.. unfortunately.

I think the Buttchigger is referring to SEC teams.
There may/will be teams outside the SEC and BIG that will make it in, that will not be in final top ten ranking.

Looking at the current AP Poll, this is how it would shake out. Landscape is a bit different with the PAC12 being out of the picture.
Top Five Conference Champions
#1 Alabama
#3 Ohio State
#8 Miami (FL)
#16 Iowa State
#21 Boise State
7 At Large Bids
#2 Texas
#4 Tennessee
#5 Georgia
#6 Oregon
#7 Penn State
#9 Missouri
#10 Michigan
Next 2 would be
That would be
#11 USC
#12 Ole Miss
With all of that being said, the CFP Committee will likely modify their rankings to keep one conference from dominating, or to strategically schedule games in the CFP.
Here is 2024 LINK
1 Michigan,
2 Washington
3 Texas
4 Alabama
No. 12 Liberty at No. 5 Florida State
No. 11 Ole Miss at No. 6 Georgia
No. 10 Penn State at No. 7 Ohio State
No. 9 Missouri at No. 8 Oregon
Liberty, (AP 22) took the 12th seed as an auto-qualifier. Ole Miss gets in at 11.

Glad you posted this, I've only been making sure Alabama finished 12th. I'll have to increase my efforts.

Wrong. I'm talking about the playoffs.
If you're not a conf champ, you need to be in the top ten to be well positioned. As dude upthread noted, there is even an outside WAY OUTSIDE chance that once in a blue moon even the #10 team could get left out.

There are still lots of idiots running around this forum thinking that the top 12 make it into the playoffs.
So yeah, some folks needed enlightening.

What would a Tennessee fan know about making the CFP?

The problem with the new system in terms of "chaos" will come in those leagues where there is maybe only one really good team, think like the Big 12 the last couple of years, where the runner up is really only top 15-ish (and KSU won it in 2022 for example)
Last year Texas beat Oklahoma State, Texas would have already been in for all intents and purposes and could have just blew off the game mentally, and then the conference gets two teams in. Thats the kind of thing that can start to look bad in the current system.
The good news is that Texas would have needed to win to clinch a bye, so thats positive, that theres still something to play for. The negative, is that if a team like Oklahoma State does manage to win that game, then suddenly they are likely to get a bye even though they are ranked like 9 or 10.
Those will be the big controversy causers in this system. Teams are going to start getting byes for winning these conference championship games that arent viewed as being one of the best teams, and in some years it will be even a non-power conference team that gets a bye.
