Expanded Playoff Impact

This is the first weekend it really sucks. Marquee game of the season tomorrow and it's basically irrelevant. Sure it makes more games like Boise State Washington State more meaningful but not really an equal trade imo. Get off my lawn and all but I miss when regular season college football games meant everything.

Win or lose tomorrow I’m not sweating it. First time I can say that the day before a big game.

Think of it this way: in the past having more than one loss meant there is little or no chance of playoffs much less playing in the NCCG. Pretty much all teams that matter are still alive, even if it's just on paper.

Right and I liked it better that way. It was 12-13 weeks where every game matters. Now it's a couple of games during the regular season and then a way too long drawn out corporate playoff.

You are wrong. The multitude of meaningful games in late October/ November outweighs your point.
Teams trying to make conference title game and teams on bubble trying to get in make a shite ton more meaning games that about 4 in the SEC all year.
Just do the math on the top 6 teams in the SEC and they all play 3-4 loseable games. They are important to the playoff picture.

Georgia/Alabama is not irrelevant to me and I'm not even a fan of those schools. It should have as high quality, high intensity football as it gets in the college game.

LSU lost 2 regular season games in 2007. Saban won 6 titles at Alabama and went undefeated twice. Regular season games have rarely "mattered" in the way you mean.

Right, they play maybe 3 losable games and all they have to do is go 1-2 in those games and they are in the playoff. That's dumb.

Way to select the statistical outlier from nearly 150 years of college football being played.

Yes, he got very fortunate with a few of those but you were never guaranteed anything with a loss and had to approach every game as such. Look at UGA last year.

It may not be irrelevant to you but to the college football playoff it is thus there is no way the intensity level can be what you describe.

it still matters.. some teams with 2 losses may not make the playoffs
whoever loses Saturday can’t lose again and know for sure they are in the playoffs..
and the winner gets the tiebreaker if they both end up with 1 or 2

Remember a few years ago when some NFC East team won the division and secured a playoff spot with like 5 wins? I don’t ever see the college football version of that.

Ahhh this is a troll thread. Carry on.

That's just your opinion. I bet the stadium will be loud tomorrow annd the fans will be rowdy. If you need to to manufacture a reason to not watch tomorrow, be my guest.
The expanded playoff has only intensified my interest in the sport because it makes roster and depth management even more critical. That and it added access for more teams than ever to have a shot on tge field to win it all.

Your last point I agree with but frankly those teams should have started their own division with their own championship long ago

The games always mattered because the part you are leaving out is that other teams had to lose in order for that to happen. And when they didn't, tough luck. Just like Alabama got assed out in 2013.
If Alabama makes a playoff in 2013, and they would have even with only 4, they likely win it again that year and the Auburn game that kept Alabama out would have then become meaningless.
Alabama and every team that lost also lost control of it's destiny in the process. You had no idea if the other teams were going to lose or not, every game mattered regardless of your narrow view.

Agreed, the only difference is one of the best teams in the country won’t be eliminated from being able to compete for the championship just because they scheduled each other during the season. For the players, the coaches, tomorrow still matters. The two biggest names in CFB sparring again to see if Bama still rules under Deboer or if it’s the Dawgs time to shine.

You can pick and choose years that support both sides. FSU's games didn't seem to matter at all last year. I understand the argument and the nostalgia for the way it was. I just don't agree that it makes the sport worse.
The vast majority (like 99.9%) of college champions have had zero or one loss. That percentage may fall to 95% with the expanded playoff. I don't view that as a bad thing.

It's a bad thing because now you've made regular season games lost their meaning more than the 4 playoff already had.
I remember years where even with the 4 team playoff it didn't even matter if Alabama lost the SECCG. It didn't matter when Georgia lost the SECCG in 2021 either.
It's one thing when there are on occasion 3 teams with a legitimate claim so you have a 4 team playoff. It's a trade off for reason. But you've only extended the bad parts without any justification for it, other than the claim of more meaningful games at the end of the year, which isn't even true as I've just highlighted. You've actually removed meaningful games.

College football was getting stale. If you weren’t:
Bama
UGA
Mich
Ohio St
Clemson
You didn’t really have a chance. This bring so many more teams into the picture. Fans of those schools hate it. Everyone else loves it. It’s that simple.
