Hugh knows high school recruiting but not the portal. No one is giving Power 2 coaches 4-5 seasons to get it right when you can address immediate roster needs by getting seasoned guys out of the portal when you've missed on high school recruits at a position.
The amount of time Freeze dedicated to Thorne might be his eventual undoing when Cam Ward was available.

Ward wasn't going to wind up at the barn.

Auburn has a lot of money. They battle Miami for high school recruits so they can battle them for portal recruits. Hugh wrongly hedged his bets on Thorne.
