Oklahoma fans...what really happened with Marcus Dupree?

I firmly believe he could have been the greatest running back to ever put on a pair of cleats.
I have heard he had a "preacher" for an advisor who got in his head. What really happened?
Hard to believe he is only 18 years old in this clip.

He had a preacher that got in his head and he made terrible decisions as a result. He was a small-town rural kid who was suddenly thrown into the bigtime and the spotlight that came with it, and he was never comfortable on that stage.
He also developed a poor relationship with Switzer because of his poor work ethic and disregard for practice so they didn't like each-other and their relationship became toxic, which exacerbated the situation.
Tragic really........never seen anything like him.
Bit I did win 1st place in grade-school art class with a poster I drew of him.

He and I were both students at the same time. I encountered him in a convenience store one day. Most solidly built person I had ever been that close to.
He got lazy after his early success. Gained weight. Was not as effective. Switzer called him out on it. He got his feelings hurt. Someone gave him bad advice and he left OU.

quote:The 30/30 piece never mentioned that part. He was so good, he probably wasn't made to practice much in high school.

Switzer did say he was the most talented athlete he ever coached.

There has never been anything like him, IMHO. Not before or since.

Colorado's uniforms were wildly different in 1982.

The speed he had...and he was very tall for a RB, but still had the agility.

He was huge. Built like a FB, but with elite RB abilities all over the place.

Marcus Dupree's cousin is a Freshman OL at OU and Marcus still comes to games and events.

Correct. Should've listened to his mother and went to State. They were running the wishbone with the inventor of the offense, Emory Bellard, as the Head Coach. He would've been close to home, which would've been huge for him, and been a beast. However, he listened to his uncle and Ken Fairly who were in it for the money and not for Marcus. OU offered the best deal and they took it.

Sometimes he looked like Jim Brown; others, Gayle Sayers. Speed, size, power, agility, acceleration to an almost sixth gear, and an eye for the holes. Remarkable. I was most impressed at how fast he hit the holes. Always at nearly full speed. Closest athlete in my opinion would be Bo Jackson.

Run around you. Run right over the top of you. Run away from you. Defensive back speed in a fullback body.
People bounced off of Dupree like they did Earl.
