Watching Buck Belue bumble through the 1981 game, I almost felt sorry for him. It was almost special needs like.

buck belue is likely one of, if not the, most overrated players in UGA history. the boomer (and older) generation reveres him for 1980 and for run lindsey run but there's no way he should be in that upper echelon A1 all-timer tier of UGA greats.
And yes, I know that passing gmaes were different then. yes I know he was a hell of an athlete and excellent baseball player. I've heard all about Buck my whole life. The FACT is that if he doesn't complete that one pass in 1980 nobody even remembers his name.

That fumble on the throw where he just drops the ball is incredible
Almost like he was throwing that game...hmm

Different time and different game back then. He made some clutch passes though, handed off to our best player ever and was the QB on a good team. Not gonna shite on him for that, but his accolades are for his place in time more than talent. Which is fine.

of course. Guys like frank sinkwich are never led in with "well it was the 1940s" though...their accolades and accomplishments stand on their own regardless of era. It's insulting to have to be told "you may not know this, but SEC teams didn't really pass it very often back then!" as a precursor to explainin away his stats.

He made some clutch passes though
certainly. Everyone talks abotu lindsey scott but he came off the bench against tech in 78 as a freshman and helped lead us to a 1 point win. I'm sure there are plenty others that were fine in their own right.

these 2 things are the precise reason why anyone ever speaks abotu him in the annals of uga greats. Which is kind of illogical since he himself was not great, he was just surrounded by other greatness.

right I think we are on the same page. But there are lot of gusy that just so happend to be on great teams that get forgotten while Buck is counted as a UGA legend for the ages. Prior to the Richt era, there were probably MANY old timers that would tell you buck was the best QB we'd ever had. Which is laughable.

Damn, that might be the definitive Buck Belue legacy blurb. Well done!

WG, if he isn't on the team that wins the Natty, his legacy would not be near the same. But… he was so he gets the love. He, like most of the dudes on those teams, really enjoyed their time at UGA. They set the bar high.

I was fortunate to attend a lot of these GA Clemson games listed. The 1980 game was a classic and the 1981 one of the most frustrating I've ever attended. Wish this series hadn't come to an end.
As for Buck, one thing I don't think he gets enough credit for is his leadership ability. Yes, winning makes it easy but still, he was a team leader and that gives him some credence imo.

Grew up in Valdosta in the 70s where Buck was a four year starter for Valdosta and held the HS passing record for 20 years. When he was set to announce his college choice there were all kinds of rumors he was going to FSU, Tenn, FSU and even Southern Cal. The guy could have gone anywhere. We were fortunate he wanted to be a Bulldog. I don't get all the hate but whatever.

We had nine (9) turnovers in that '81 game and Clemson only put up 13 points. Both of those facts are mind-boggling...

He gets shite on all the time on here and tRant.Perhaps he was overrated in the 80's and 90's but clearly not now.Dont how many times his NC game has been mentioned on here and how few times he has been mentioned as a 1st all SEC QB in '80 and '81
He was a QB of his time and compared to other SEC QB's and offenses of his era he was very effective and talented especially his '81 season.

Who exactly is doing this?
