Kirby Smart nearing retirement from this statement

And I tell you, being an SEC head coach, that's a true statement. It's not the years, it's the mileage. It's been a great nine-year run for us at Georgia

Maybe. He's got tons of money and when he decides he'd rather not deal with the stress of coaching he can walk away at any time.
But, like Saban did, he'll have to ask himself what he'd do with himself if not coaching. Saban talked about that a lot for explaining why he didn't retire despite being past retirement age.
In the end, he decided he could stay close enough to the sport to get his "football fix" by being a part time Bama sports employee while doing broadcasting while eliminating the stressful side of coaching.
Kirby is less of a natural broadcaster than Saban. He talks to fast and clips off his own words when talking. It's never sounded like he had another passion outside of football. I can't see him going into politics like Tubberville or Tom Osbourne did.
At some point the stress of the job will outweigh the joy of the job. But predicting that is hard. Saban was predicted to be retiring soon for 10 years before he actually retired.

Yep, this is his 9th season.

Don’t blame him one bit. As much as I can’t stand Matt Luke, he did it right by getting his buyout from Ole Miss, getting paid well by UGA a few years along with a title and hanging it up.

I would not be surprised in the least. He's talked numerous times about the grind of being a college football coach and how it affects your mental health. He has young kids and he knows he's missing out on them.
Brandon McLendon took a less stable NFL because he didn't want to do it anymore. He was tired of dealing with 18 year old complaining that they aren't getting paid enough and seniors complaining that freshmen are making more money.
The transfer portal and NIL money will have far reaching consequences beyond what we're seeing now.

I honestly don't think he'll retire anytime soon. He's got to find something else that drives him if he stops coaching.
His youngest child is 12 so he could do the "spend more time with my kids" thing as retirement activity. Andrew (the youngest) seems to like hanging around with his dad and the UGA football team at practices and games though.
His other two kids (twins) are 16.
You may have seen images similar to this with him holding a white board on the UGA sideline with various meme statements on it.

Deep down Smart is a cowardly wuss. He sees all this incoming competition and NILand might want to go out while he is seen as one of the elite coaches so he can get broadcasting gigs after he retires. I wouldn't blame him, but he also doesn't have the balls to coach into his 70s like Saban did. Probably the best thing he could do for his career. His coaching path is fixing to get a lot harder.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he calls it quit after next season. 10 years is a LONG time to be a HC in CFB today....it is a never ending job. I would be shocked if he goes beyond 15 years. He has talked a lot about this. I hope, of course, that he is ate up with it and stays about 30 LOL but it is unlikely, especially as often as he mentions it.
I also would not be at all surprised if he retired from UGA and went somewhere else after a few years. He may get burnt out, retire, realize he has not got a lot going on and return somewhere. At some point the money is more or less meaningless....this is so for anyone who is making their nut as we get older. The only thing that keeps one going after that point is the desire to do something you enjoy.

Lol.
His greatest obstacle just left and now he's going to leave because he's "scared"?
I love the incomprehensible stupidity in your mindset.

Saban went home at his worse in an era that was getting beyond his skill set. Saban was damn lucky to make the playoffs last year to save some face as he retired. And Smart still only managed to beat him once........But yes, I stand by the fact Smart is a wuss and some of his hardest competition is ahead of him. Smart isn't really a great coach..

Kirby retiring AFTER Saban retires is the antithesis of being scared.
It would be him realizing he doesn’t have anything to prove to himself, but probably has a lot to teach his kids.
When you have generational wealth and multiple championships with young kids at home, coaching 80+ hours / week isn’t about providing for them, it’s about you.
Not to mention the horror show that is NIL/transfer portal era CFB.

I would love for him to retire but he could coach for another 25 years and especially at the way he is winning.

94-16 with two NC, 2 SEC Championships, 5-1 in playoffs.
He’s one of the best ever in the SEC.

It looks like you are saying a great coach wins with bad defense, a gimmick offense, and insane play calling.

What the hell is the OP talking about

Saban won in his era, with great recruiting and organization but he was never a phenom field coach. Once he couldn't horde NFL talent 3 deep, his days were numbered. He also had a very difficult time hiring OCs because he didn't understand offense.

A lawyer friend of mine retired several years ago. He had made his money and thought he was ready to slow down. After less than two years he reopened his firm. In his words, "there's only so many rounds of golf you can play before you get bored." I don't know when Kirby will leave UGA, but he's too young to permanently retire.

UGA's offense was ranked 5th in 2022 and 5th in 2023.
UGA was 8th in scoring offense in 2021, 4th in 2022 and 5th in 2023.
Have you watched UGA football the last few seasons? It sounds like you're looking back to 2017 to determine what Kirby's offenses are like.
Saban has run prolific offenses up until last year as well. They were 6th in total offense in 2018, 6th in 2019, 4th in 2020, 8th in 2021, 11th in 2022... but dropped to 58th last year do to having Milroe and no real elite WR's.
I honestly get the feeling you don't know much about college football.
