“It's a profession where people just like to put stuff out there. I'm very committed to (Duke). Everybody knows I'm very happy at this place. We're doing a lot of really special things. My family's very happy here. We love everything that this place is for,” Elko said Monday during his weekly press conference.

As TheDevilsDen.com reported earlier this week, Duke Football Head Coach Mike Elko has indicated that he intends to return to Durham next season, continuing to build on the 15-9 start he has engineered since taking over the program in 2022. The Athletic's Nicole Auerbach confirmed that report on Twitter today, saying she had been told by sources that Elko informed Duke he was staying last weekend.

Mike Elko left the Duke football program in the middle of the night.
Duke football head coach Mike Elko did a little more than just go down into his kitchen for a midnight night snack on Sunday.
He and his family boarded a private plane from Durham to College Station as he is set to officially become the next head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies on Monday.

While Texas A&M fans are unlikely to care much, Elko may not be welcome back in Durham anytime soon. This isn't because Elko's services weren't appreciated while at Duke -- the Blue Devils improved quite well this year and are an ACC force to be reckoned with assuming they hire the right replacement. However, Elko left Duke's players high and dry, telling them he was leaving for A&M over a Zoom call.
It should be noted that per the report above, many of Elko's players opted not to attend, which is all you really need to know about how this was handled.

When footage emerged of Elko arriving in College Station, Texas, early Monday morning, players were critical of the way he left.
Current Blue Devils were not quiet on social media, responding with memes about the manner in which Elko left the program, seemingly unbeknownst to the Duke players amid the late-night frenzy.

Thats cold blooded Elko…

Our community welcomes our new Duke football head coach Manny Diaz. We can be happy for our new future. We must also honor that we have invisible, moral injuries from how former Duke Football Coach Mike Elko left us.
Unfortunately, moral injuries linger. At Duke, we have the moral imagination to heal these injuries in a healthy way.
Leaders can resign. Fleeing under the cover of darkness is the problem.
“But, sports is a business,” some say. Tell that to the human heart. Betrayal is bad business. It’s costly. No good business leader flees under the cover of darkness.
“Midnight Mike” Elko was a trusted authority figure. He asked for sacrifices by his players on behalf of the football program, based on the value of mutual commitment that goes beyond mere self-interest. When we are committed to each other, we say goodbye properly.
How did Coach Elko leave?
Monday, Nov. 27, before our class started, we saw a video of Elko landing in College Station, Texas around 3 a.m. He descended from the steps of a private jet. We saw a clip of him dancing with his new administrators. He scheduled a 10 a.m. call with the Duke football team to inform them about his decision. The Zoom meeting lasted less than four minutes.
This semester we taught a core leadership course at Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering to more than 150 graduate engineers. One of us — professor Allegra Jordan — encountered a student of ours on the way to class. He had a cough from the cold air at the Pitt football game, doing work for the program. This student took great pride in being at Duke, not just for its academic excellence but also because he bought into Duke as a caring and ethical community. He beamed speaking about the win and his role in helping the team. He didn't know Coach Elko fled before dawn. The color drained from his face as he heard the news. He stuttered in disbelief. “Why didn’t he tell us?”

You must be mistaken , cause the Aggies have a code and wouldn't do anything like that.

Riley and his goons tried to sneak out of Norman at 3:00AM on a private USC jet and got caught and filmed doing so. He wasn't going to notify the team they were leaving either.

Eh, pretty big difference between Elko, leaving Duke and what happened with Schloss. And I think you know that. Kinda low level troll effort from you.
It’s one thing to leave a few days after you’ve “indicated” you’re sticking around, main season is over, just a bowl game ahead. And it’s totally another to chew out a reporter for directly asking you and proceeding to lie to their face about staying less than 24 hours before you leave. And being in negotiations with your next school during a title run.
Look, Aggies are no doubt mad about it, who would want to lose a good coach to an instate rival right after he leads you to playing in a championship game? But I’d argue more of the outrage is in how it transpired not just that it happened. Had the longhorns fired their coach and came after him a month from now, Aggies would still be mad, but less so than they are this week.

Really the only difference is that Schloss went to a rival and Schloss was mean to a TexAgs reporter. And coaches are douches to reporters all the time.
Aggies didn't seem to have any problems with him treating the reporter that way until his departure was known.

By all indications, this was going on for awhile. It wasn't really a title run when it started.

You would rather lose a whole month of working toward next year? That doesn't seem logical. If the dude was going to leave, it's better for it to happen ASAP.

That’s a bit of a stretch, sure a few folks said he was out of line, but a majority were fine with the question. Lots of praise even early on for the guy as for many years the local media has always been “afraid to ask the tough questions” so lots of folks appreciated he stepped up to the plate.

So you do admit there’s a pretty big difference in Elko and Schloss then? Remind me if we were reaching out to Elko during the season, while his team was either going to the CFP or potentially going to the CFP. Come on, you’re not this obtuse, it is more than just being mean to a reporter.
And not a title run? Sure if the rumors are true and it started around the A&M vs Georgia series then we “weren’t on a run yet” but we were pretty dang good during the season, ranked number one for a few weeks, so certainly expected to push deep into the post season.

No you certainly wouldn’t want to lose that time, but it would make it easier to come to terms with vs walking out the door less than 24 hours from playing in a title game. Again, plays more into the fact that this has been going on awhile in the background.

A&M hired Elko 2 days after Dukes regular season ended. Less than a 24 hour difference between Texas and Schloss….

No Elko was going to a bowl game (hired him before that even happened). For those smaller programs like Duke they tend to be a quite meaningful to the players and fans.

I’m sure the Blue Devil players really appreciated their coach getting poached before their first postseason practice. At least Texas waited 24 hours after A&Ms season ended.

I read all that shite and didn’t see any part regarding our AD waiting in a small town cemetery to hire Mike.

I'm sure A&M didn't have any negotiation with Schlossnagle whatsoever when his national seed TCU team was still playing in 2021. None whatsoever. An aggie NEVER lies, cheats or steals...

From the timeline, Aggie absolutely was talking with him during the regular season. And he still had a bowl game to play.
They felt like they were did dirty just like you do now.

Coaching changes are always cut throat. So because we got Elko to take the Head Coaching job we’re supposed to be less upset because we did the same thing to Duke. Please….Duke didn’t just play in the ship and then dip the next day and take the entire coaching staff.
