For 1, advising to pay 5th-7th round picks to stay in college with more money than what is being in the NFL is dumb. They aren’t high draft picks.
Mason Smith and Mekhi Wingo were each offered a minimum of $500k (likely more) to return. Smith surprisingly made the right decision as he got drafted in the 2nd round and will likely be getting a lot more than that.

They offered him 500k supposedly. Wingo said no.
He probably thought he would get drafted in the 4th or 5th at latest.

Not a fan of Brian Kelly but if they're fighting back against the NIL market I'm for it.

quote:I think this ^^ is exactly what he's trying to say. CBK wants to build a solid foundation, and it's difficult to do these days. A consistent contender has to have a foundation with depth, that isn't achievable in shifting sand, i.e. players portalling in & out, left & right seeking the money train.
All trolling aside, I think what he's trying to say is he wants to build up the longterm culture, multiyear players who want to be at LSU, and not rely on hitting the "free agent" portal market every season.
Look at what Kirby's doing at UGA, that team is built from within.
That said, we have some holes to fill, and if you want to compete for a title, you need to fill those holes somehow.
MAYBE what his plan is, is to commit to the high schoolers and get them to commit to LSU, to build the program; instead of getting a transfer or 2 every year to start. Maybe he's trying to turn that corner now, before it becomes precedent here.

Based on what we've witnessed so far, these "highest bidder" type guys aren't even usually elite contributors so why risk destroying team chemistry for that?
You end up with an A&M situation.
Look at the championship teams, 2023 Michigan was #14 in team talent, 2023 Washington was #26, neither had any big name portal transfers.

That’s not what your original post said, you absolute knob. You said something about buying players back “out of the draft.” That reads like you’re going to buy back a player after he’s drafted. You can’t do that but that’s what you said. If you need writing lessons, I minored in journalism. Glad to help you out.

I think you just misunderstood, I took his statement as exactly what he said.

"We're not in the market for buying players"
Clearly Jayden Daniels and Harold Perkins went to LSU for the ACADEMICS...

Harold Perkins is from Louisiana originally.
Jayden Daniels was basically picking between LSU and Missouri.
I doubt LSU signed either of them based on money alone.

This idea that Oklahoma paid a huge amount more than LSU or Texas offered is wrong. He got paid less than a million, OU isnt in the business of resetting the rental market.
Texas, LSU insiders butthurt their coaches couldn't close
The last demand his handler gave LSU was for more money than any player on the roster or assistant coach on staff currently makes in a year. LSU told him to frick off. Texas did as well, even though they could offer more than either LSU or OU if they wanted to.

Barrow and Williams were definitely overpaid but LSU would've paid it in a heartbeat if they had the money...they don't.
LSU has the money. What they don't have is the money to pay the other 80 some odd players on the roster the same amount when they ask the coach why in the frick they are making less than some random DT from the spring portal.

Agree with having discipline with who gets paid what. Wise move.
But if your NIL overall program is not competitive you will not be competitive in the SEC.

I think LSU's NIL deals are fine, and I think Kelly wants to set precedent now that the guys who are here now will get the money, not some random dude from the portal who wasn't more than an average starter.
That gets more kids coming younger/out of high school, where they can develop and learn within the program.
You DON'T want to be the school that reloads in the portal every year, and pays through the nose to do so. That's not sustainable. If you can land a legit superstar, you take him and pay. But you don't pay a guy a million simply because you want to take "a DL". Dude might be a bust, or he might be just rotation.
Look at LSU's players drafted this year. Mehki Wingo was good, Jordan Jefferson was solid, Maason Smith got hurt and didn't show out on the field.
Wingo and Jefferson were transfers. Wingo went in the 5th rd because he's got limited size and upside, what you see is what you get, and we don't know if he can thrive in the NFL at his size. Jefferson went in the 4th because he's bigger.
Maason Smith went in the 2nd, because he was a stud, and if he recovers to pre-injury and develops, could be a stud in the NFL.
You want to sign more Maason Smiths out of high school (and hope they don't get hurt), instead of continously signing 4th and 5th rd picks because "we need to fill a hole". You fill the hole for 1, maybe 2 years, and then you're back in the portal, looking at another B or C player.
