It’s easy to be “up the road” from a crash site when you’re going 115mph in your 700hp Jeep Trackhawk and the other car gets stopped by a tree (multiple power poles, trees, and eventually an Apt building)

Nobody is defending Carter for speeding or reckless driving.
But nothing in his driving was tied to the accident. It was a single car wreck. Yes he was breaking the law in that he was tripling the speed limit and racing another vehicle. But the other vehicle didn't crash because of it. It crashed because the other driver was drunk and couldn't handle a turn at high speed.
They weren't trying to pass his vehicle when they crashed. He didn't cut them off. He had effectively "won" the race they were having and was "up the road". She crashed because she was going 100 miles an hour around a turn while drunk, hit the curb and lost control.
Of the passengers, the two not wearing seatbelts were either horribly injured or killed, while the one who wore his seatbelt had an injury minor enough that he was able to take part in senior bowl practices just a week or two after the accident.
The lessons here are pretty simple. While street racing is dumb and shouldn't happen, the biggest lessons are don't drive drunk and wear a seatbelt in a car at all times. A lot of stupid things were done that night, but drunk driving and not wearing seatbelts were the stupidest.
