Not confident in that, really. Like what I've seen so far in the TBD areas of his profile (recruiting effort, defensive hires), but nobody will know if he's "the guy" for a few years.
We know he can coach and develop. We'll see if he can recruit and grind in this league. He's already shown he understands the effort and commitment it takes to recruit here, though, which is good to see. But results are TBD.

but it can be argued that he isn’t a top 5 active coach
Other than Smart and Sarkesian, who I already pointed out who in the SEC is better? Kelly is the only one you can even have a discussion about, and only his longevity even makes it questionable. Nobody else has any record of achievement. I say this as a guy who wanted Kiffin because I thought he’d be a good fit but wouldn’t rank him higher.
The game has left Dabo behind, and he’s been unwilling to change. I’d have had him as a top coach 2 years ago, certainly don’t now.

I hope they do better than the one his coaches fielded at Washington last year. I think he mentioned defense one time in his introductory press conference, and it was almost by accident.
If LSU had Washington’s defense last year, they probably win a national championship.

Alabama with the 23rd best coach would still wreck shop. Outside of Bryant and Saban, Alabama’s coaches have all ranked a lot closer to 123rd than 23rd. I am not sure that Dubose and Shula weren’t in the 130’s out of 133. And they still each managed a 10 win season and division or conference title in their short stints.
No one is coming in and replacing Saban as Saban. But Alabama is not on the verge of going 6-6 or worse as so many on here are desperately hoping.

We're painfully aware of how bad our defense was last year, but this thread is about DeBoer. Washington was ranked #96 in total defense last year. That isn't going to fly in the SEC anymore than our defense did last year. As far as I can tell it just isn't a focus for him.

Washington was ranked 26th in defense by FEI and 50th by SP+. 56th in scoring defense. And he literally brought 0 of those defensive coaches with him.
They played the following offenses per SP+, as well:
#1 Oregon
#1 Oregon
#3 USC
#6 Texas
#9 Arizona
#12 Michigan
#26 Oregon St
#29 Boise State
5 of the 15 games they played were against top 10 offenses and 8 of the 15 games they played were against top 30 offenses.

Washington’s #96 total defense played for a national championship. If LSU had the #96 total defense, they would have won the national championship.
Obviously, nobody wants to watch their team have a shite defense, but if your offense is good enough, your defense doesn’t have to be elite. Or even good.

I wouldn’t judge the guy for this. I personally like him and I think he’s a decent coach but he certainly has challenges ahead man regardless of what Alabama thinks, but they will definitely slip for several years and whether or not they get it together after that is to be decided.

He didn't say in conferece - he said "in the game currently"
If DeBoer was still a the U of W - would Bama fans still consider him a "top 5 coach currently"???? IMO I doubt it...
I am not saying that he won't become that or have the potential to become one of the top college football coaches in the game - but IMO he isn't there yet.

Don't judge their entire fanbase by this message board. Their real fans know they fricked.
Funny most fans I know beyond this message board are looking forward to seeing what DeBoer can and will do. Oh, we expect a tremendous amount of noise from AU, LSU and other programs, since they normally turnover coaches like Saban famously said, "shite through a tin-horn".
I personally have VERY high expectations for this coach and the staff he's put together. But I'll temper that excitement with grace, for the first season anyway.

Your fanbase is excited about a dude who averages 3.5 losses a year.
We're excited about a guy that just went 14-1 and made it to the national championship game.
But we're the delusional ones.

The guy hasn't coached a down of football in the SEC but the local gumps have convinced themselves he will just pick up where he tGOAT left off. This board is going to be better than ever over the next few years if any of them stick around.

This right here.
But yet, bama fans BLASTED and continue to blast LSU for hiring CBK. Last i checked... CBK has more wins and yep, before you whine about CBK not being able to win the big game, remind yourself what deboer did in his first natty as the HC.
