Wommack has been a head coach for the past three years at S. Alabama and a DC for three different schools prior. Here are some stats on his defenses.
His first job as a DC was at Eastern Illinois in the FCS division.
2014- Defense ranked 2nd in the conference in scoring defense, third in total defense and third in yards per play
2015- Defense ranked 2nd in scoring defense, 2nd in total defense and 2nd in yards per play.
2nd job- South Alabama DC in the Sun Belt, 11 teams 2016, 12 teams 2017
2016- 7th in scoring defense, 6th in YPP and total yards
2017- 8th in scoring defense, 7th in YPP and 9th in total yards
3rd job- Indiana B1G- 14 teams
2019- 9th in scoring, YPP, and total yards
2020- Covid year, 4th in scoring, 9th in ypp, 5th in total yards
HC job -South Alabama, Sun Belt- 2021 10 teams 2022 14 teams, 2023 14 teams
2021- 5th scoring, total yards and YPP,
2022- 4th scoring, total yards and YPP
2023- 3rd scoring, 3rd in YPP and 2nd in total yards
As an actual DC, not a whole lot there that screams he was that great.
The S. Alabama defense was ranked 9th out of ten teams in YPP the year before he took over as head coach.
Pretty solid turn around the next three years.

I thought his numbers at Indiana were better than that, but I think they were a vast improvement over what Indiana had done previous.
Wommack's dad Dave Wommack is a former DC in the SEC (Ole Miss & Arkansas, along with Georgia Tech and Southern Miss), and was a guy who followed DC John Thompson often (Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina, Ole Miss, etc) - they were GA's together at some point for Lou Holtz at Arkansas, early 80's
Kane was probably drawing formations on a white board when he was 3
The former Fayetteville Purple Dog and Arkansas Razorback becomes DC at Alabama - The Cradle of Coaches strikes again

DC at 1-AA Eastern Illinois, he was 27 years old, for Kim Dameron
DC at South Alabama, he was 29 years old - was that for Joey Jones?
Synopsis, his people - before he was born - came out of early 1980's Lou Holtz Arkansas, his dad Dave as a GA, John Thompson who he's known since birth as a GA, Kim Dameron, player at Arkansas then who hired him at Eastern Illinois, even vast connections through all that to the Ed Orgeron Mafia (Thompson/Northwestern State, but also Ed @ Arkansas under Hatfield, and those connections helping Bill Johnson to Arkansas after Bill (Thompson/NW St) and Ed (Thompson/NW St) both GA'ing at Miami under Jimmy Johnson - make this stuff up! )
daddy Dave under Jesse Branch, Arkansas/HC @ SW Missouri State...played and coached for Frank, and coached for Lou
Dameron in his 60's now, bringing back Fort Smith Southside High football as his swansong
Plenty of Ole Miss influence through the same people, his dad, John Thompson who he probably calls Uncle John
and thus also, aka, Houston Nutt peeps...later on
Kane got on early as a GA under Freeze (Tom Allen) at Ole Miss...yes, BeBe's name would have been mentioned in that interview, and some good laughs
when he was playing at Arkansas, his dad was the DB coach at South Carolina. That's a pretty good SEC pedigree
ETA: Kane's dad even coached for Southern Cal legend John Robinson at UNLV, when Kane was 5. THE John Robinson. And who did BeBe hire as a senior analyst at LSU? John Robinson.
Little Kane got a pedigree

Nope. Usually already know these things when one of the powers hires a DC. Just interested. Had no clue who he was as he's never been a position coach in the conference or a place like Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, OU, etc. before. Looked it up to see. Maybe a good hire. Like I said, defense had a nice turnaround with him as HC.
The real question is not if I'm worried, but are the Bama fans worried.

Nah. I'm excited. I'm from the Mobile area, so I've followed Kane for a while and think he will do really well at Bama. I'm just ready to find out who's for sure staying or leaving on our team.

Seems like a competent DC but nothing overly impressive.
One question: how much did he delegate to his DC while HC? 3rd in that conference isn’t bad by any means but doesn’t suggest he’s Tier 1.
Whether or not this is will work out probably depends on recruiting, player development, etc.

Time will tell if it's a good hire but just as getting a big time head coach to follow in Saban's footsteps was going to be challenging so is getting a big time d-coordinator to do the same.
As for Wommack, he's at least familiar with the area and fwiw South Alabama did hold an Oklahoma State offense that averaged just under 30 ppg to 7 points. Then again, UCF held that same offense to 3 points so who knows

It's a gamble after another gamble, risk on top of risk. Yeah, this should be fine.

I agree. Georgia fans are practically shitting their pants at how Alabama has a new head coach and assistant coaches. Worst thing that could've possibly happened!

Is Kane planning on bringing the 4-2-5 to Alabama?
