I promise this is the last time I'll say this:
If the QB holds the ball a long time he is likely to take a lot of sacks.
Our QB held the ball longer than any QB in the league thus he was sacked a lot.
It wasn't all on this OL. They played well at times, and have a lot of talent everywhere but center.
This is also an OC problem. Once this became a theme you have to make adjustments to get the ball out faster, or roll the pocket, or give some eye candy to slow down rushers.
+1
But other quarterbacks had the same thing happen. At times, it was like watching sh*t through a tin horn ... even on the afternoon against Michigan.
Both can be true.

What do we need to fix?

Doug Marrone was the OL coach Bryce’s first year starting. The line vastly improved the next year when Wilford took over. Bryce was a magician in the pocket and kept us from being much worse in 2021. Milroe has zero pocket awareness and holds the ball too long. Everyone wants to blame Wolford and Rees but the reality is BoB and Marrone set us back. The OLine was good by the end of the year but our QB situation was extremely limited. I hope Saban has a legit QB battle going into spring ball or Jalen significantly improves with his processing and understanding of protections.

Giving up 4+ sacks in 8 of 13 games, including six consecutive games with 4+ sacks allowed, would be a good starting point of shite that needs to be fixed prior to next season.

I was asking what will stop us from giving up so many sacks?

Milroe must have been taking ice baths every damn week SMH. Yet people want to blame everything on him.

Damn Wolford needs to revamp his methods cuz that's unexcusable.

You folks are so tribal.
CLEARLY our oline was BAD in pass pro this season. There's no sugarcoating it.
Also, Milroe held onto the ball too long.
Both things are undisputably true.
We need to fix BOTH of these things. As well as our QB and Oline being able to communicate effectively on how to protect.

Well IMO - and as you stated in the prior post - I think our QBs’ lack of pocket and situational awareness is a significant contributor to our total sack numbers.
Also, communication across the line needs to improve. Too many times this year, we had the guard and tackle (particularly on the left side) screwing up blocking assignments and allowing free rushers. CNS even alluded to this on the most recent episode with Pat Mcafee. I understand this happens sometimes, but it occurred frequently this year. I give Proctor a pass since he’s young, but by the end of the year, they should have this type of stuff figured out more so than they did.
As much as I like Milroe, he needs a lot of work if he is to play QB at an elite level.

Our pass protection at the beginning of the year was bad but it significantly improved. Jalen had a ton of time the second half of the season. He wanted to hit the deep ball every play and wouldn’t take what the defense gave them. In the Michigan game, they did a decent job when Milroe was able to look to the sideline before the snap.

The o line was terrible in arse protection all season.

We had the worst pass-blocking O line Saban has ever had at Bama, and one of the worst in the country this year. Not sure why some want to blame everyone but the o line. Not to mention a C who couldn't snap it accurately or on time.
Do you have any stat to back up your claim that Milroe held onto the ball longer than any other QB? Cause he got sacked a lot before he even had time to throw the ball.

That’s not even remotely true.

I agree with this. My problem is with the posters on this board who have decided that because Milroe isn't elite it means he's a terrible QB. Is he elite right now? No. Is he a good QB who has limitations he needs to improve? Absolutely. There's a middle ground between he's elite and he sucks.

Pass protection issues this year:
- true freshman left tackle - he got better as the year progressed but still a way to go.
- Bad right guard play early in the season - got a little better when Dalcourt replaced
- center blocking was not terrible but not great eather. when the DL pressure on him ramped up his snapping went to hell
- RB pass pro - #2 was pretty good but not as good as previous top RB's. #5 was not that good but got a little better as the season progressed. #26 was bad early but improved a little as the season progressed. #22 was a true freshman with lots to learn, injuries slowed his ability to learn under fire in practice and games
- chipping with the TE - chip and release was useless as the QB never figured out how to use a safety valve late in a play,
- keeping the TE in for pass protection - the better teams shifted the heavy rush away from the TE side
- High/Low overloading the OT's. the RB protection has to be shifted pre snap to help High/Low pressure. Alabama was not good at making that type of adjustment. The QB has to make that adjustment. It is not something the OL can call.
- OL put on too much weight in the off season. EW appears to like heavier OL but it cost them agility they could not afford to lose.
- QB holding the ball too long waiting for THE guy he picked before the play to maybe get open.
- QB giving ground backward while waiting which made the edge attack angle better than the OT's could protect against without needed superior agility and foot quickness.
Other than that, the Alabama pass protection was great...so long as you do not consider sacks or bad snaps.

What constitutes a good OL?
I’d argue it boils down to these items:
-Ability to create run lanes
*Sub 5YPC at RB for the first time since 2007
Grade = average
-Ability to protect the QB in the pass game
*set a record for sacks allowed but I would argue half or more of those sacks were a byproduct of holding the ball too long or not managing the pocket. When adjusted for things that weren’t their fault and the inability of the QB to adjust protection Id argue they were actually fine.
Grade = average
-Ability to avoid penalties
* grade = poor
-Ability to avoid game changing mistakes
* Grade = horrific
We mostly fixed our issues at LT by the end of the year when Proctor matured, Booker was outstanding and Latham was for the most part great.
We were let down by the early freshmen mistakes at LT, the flaming dumpster fire at C and the disaster at RG for half the season that was salvaged by Roberts and ended up a strength.
If we figure out C and RT and get Milroe on track between the ears I actually think we are back to elite next year at OL.

I don't know if it ever improved, statistically, but at one point in the season, Milroe was holding onto the ball longer than any QB in the country.

Pass protection is one part communication and one part execution.
Communication involves knowing who to block. Sounds easy, but when teams run stunts and blitzes it can be tricky.
Execution is simply blocking the guy you're supposed to block.
Proctor didn't do a great job at times in execution.
The team did a better job in execution when Roberts came in later in the year.
I expect a big improvement in 2024. I thought Wofford did a fine enough job from 2021 to 2022 and while it looks like they regressed in 2023 some of that is on Milroe and some is on Proctor.
