Was Elko not a good recruiter while he was here? I just don’t see how we’ll drop massively in recruiting. Top 5 would be pretty rare but if Elko can manage 9-10 wins next season (tall task around here I know) I just don’t see us landing outside the top 10-12
Also the way the portal works now and his early willingness to use it you can reload a roster in one off season to make up for that level of recruiting. I’m not saying it’s going to be all sunshine and rainbows but this idea that it’s all doom and gloom is unfounded currently. New HC, new staff, new era. I’m in the wait and see camp

I’ll take the flip side of this.
We are coming off another season of starting ranked top 25 - finishing unranked. We fired the coach that we gave a ridiculous amount of money and a plaque for an undated National Championship. Much of our talent - and certainly our depth - has high-tailed it out of town. “Seen ‘em win, seen ‘em lose, never seen ‘em quit”? Can’t say that anymore. We are the poster child for pissing away money, talent and fan support.
We are in a conference with its shiny new toys - Texas with a Big12 championship and CFP appearance - OU with a 10-win season - both firmly entrenched in our recruiting backyard and far ahead of us in the rankings.
Georgia, Bama, LSU, Mizzou, Ole Miss coming off 10+ win seasons. Three of them with NCs in the last few years, one with the top recruiting class in the nation and at least in the convo for a NC next year.
We are at the kiddie table. Hoping Arky, Miss State, Auburn and Vandy keep us out of the cellar. “8-4” isn’t an insult - it’s an objective.

I say it’s unfounded because this is a new staff. We haven’t even seen the final product they’ll put on the field in 2024, I just think it’s way to early to hit the panic button. Let’s at least get to spring
Posted on 1/2/24 at 5:29 pm to Ag_16
No panic button. A&M will be more what we have always been prior to Fisher. A nine or ten win team at best, with the occasional magic season sprinkled in. I’m okay with that. Fisher’s talent played like clowns.
Elko will bring some stability

It really is every bit as dire as that, and I actually like the Elko hire.
A&M will never win a football conference championship in my life time, let alone a national one. There’s simply too many top level programs in the conference now, and the ags ain’t one of ‘em. Maybe a drastic sea change takes place when this current “leadership” dies off, and the next generation emerges with new ideas, but I can’t see it.

This thread will be fun to laugh at down the road

Apparently Jimbo just did an interview on Pardon My Take with Barstool recently. Should be released in the next week or so.
I dont listen or watch much barstool content, but i'll tune in to that one. I doubt he says much negative about A&M as dont contracts usually have something in them about non disclosure for a certain period of time? But I'll be curious about what they do ask him and he says about his future.

Every answer will definitely be very politically correct
I don’t know why on earth he would ever want to coach anywhere else again, he is financially set. I know I would just go fishing.

Spot on guess, they don’t even talk a ton about A&M, but what they do he’s complimentary and nice about it. And yeah, I’d be fishing hunting every day for the rest of my life too, but he says he’s interested in getting back into it. Sounds like he will coach again.
YouTube link
Here’s the link for anybody interested. Starts about an hour and a half in.
One interesting note is they discuss the national championship game and what makes Michigan and Washington successful to get there. Jimbo goes on about player lead teams and how you have to have buy in from the kids to filter down from the coaches and whatnot… kinda ironic considering he was star chasing on the recruiting trail and ignored a lot of character risks.
Gets asked about yell leaders and defends them saying they’re good guys.
Says he was surprised by the firing and thought they were just a couple of injuries away from a good season.
Said he wants to write a book on the NIL/Sliced bread debate. Said that first year A&M NIL deals only totaled about 1 million across all the sports on campus, nowhere close to 30 mil for just the 2022 football class.

I’m not surprised he didn’t have anything bad to say. Not just cause of the big pay day but I think he genuinely loved being at A&M

Elko will turn us around. He actually has brain cells when it comes to hiring competent coordinators unlike our last coach.

I will say, I have to give Elko a solid A grade on how he’s done so far. Went to the portal and filled holes on the roster, avoided desperation moves like bringing back Denver Harris, did a good job on the recruiting class considering the transition and held on to Bussey. Hired a good staff around him as well. Very pleased with how he’s started off the first three months.
Long way to go and we will see how it all translates in the fall, but I like it so far.

I loved the Elko hire and am still a little surprised with his progress so far. Can't wait to see what he can do with the kind of talent A&M brings in and beating Notre Dame in his first game as A&M's head coach would be huge.

Quote on Texags interview from player - damning of the former regime
If nothing else, it will be nice to have everybody rowing in the same direction.
quote:
“I love that because everyone is doing what they need to be doing now,” tackle Trey Zuhn said. “There’s no room for ‘who’s doing what, who’s doing what?’ They were kind of letting … not letting stuff slide last year … but now we’re really strict on that. I like that because everybody is doing the right things. It’s showing up in football, too.”

You hear comments like that all the time after a coaching change.

Yep, every single time
It’s obligatory

Is this where we revisit the "It's a new day in Bright" texags report template?
Posted on 3/28/24 at 12:29 pm to CGSC Lobotomy
Actually, we already know from ESPN that many players didn't regularly attend practice. Some got special consideration.

Like what I’m seeing and hearing from Elko thus far

Yep. While I like the progress I’m seeing so far under Elko, it’s completely cliche at this point. “The old regime was easy, new one is way tougher”. “More accountability”. Etc. etc.
