MBB, Final: James Madison 77, Arkansas State 73.
Red Wolves (10-14, 6-6 SBC) made it interesting late, but couldn't overcome a slow first half and the Dukes (21-3, 9-3) hold on

Coach Hod may have something special next year.

Both big runs in the first half is what cost us the game and both of them had one constant as the catalyst; Pringle.

It isn't just this game either.
We've had a problem with giving up big scoring runs all season, and it's because we let our offense dictate our defensive effort.

That was disappointing to say the least BUT

We are in first place, control our own destiny.

Win Saturday and we are good. Rtr

fyi - the top 4 teams are all .500 against each other right now. They'd have a tough time seeding the tourney right now. I think SCar would get the #1 seed due to the win vs Ken.

I actually looked this up at halftime, and at that point Rylan was -22.

Somehow it got worse.

Hopefully the team can refocus and get geared up for Saturday before getting a nice week off. Don’t let yesterday turn into two losses.

Rylan was often tasked with defending #2. It was a lot to ask

Yeah, he had a good one a few days ago, so I guess we can hope that's an anomaly.

I think maybe we do need to talk about Walters though, especially relative to where some of us (me) thought he might be at this point in the season.

Does anyone else think we fall off too much when he comes in? Not only is he a defensive liability, it's like our whole offensive flow goes out the window.

To be clear, I really do like the kid and I'm not basing this on any seasonal metrics, just a gut feeling. It just doesn't seem like his minutes are beneficial.

They let post players camp right under the basket, the lane means nothing anymore.

The so called step back threes are traveling. You can't move your pivot foot but Aubie was dancing all night in the lane and at the three point line.

Broome could do no wrong to that crew, he could mug you down low but you could not touch him. The Doug Shows traveling whistle show strikes again.

All that aside, this team is just not very physical and cannot play that style.

Could not agree more with both of these points, not really related to last night but in general.

I yell 3 seconds at the refs every game and I feel like people don't know what that means anymore.

Walters can't play against certain teams at this point but he can help us down the line this year. Has to get a little better on D in the years to come.

Yesterday was the only game I missed this season.
How was Stevenson’s game yesterday?
Stevenson showed good defense in the previous 5 games. He had a lot of positive elements in offense and defense, especially when he played with Nelson.

We're going to struggle against teams that can take advantage of our weak frontcourt and have Guards that play physical on both sides, that's just how we're built this season. It seems we struggle the most when we're not dictating tempo, when we're out running and pushing pace is when we're at our best. The incoming recruiting class can't get here soon enough, the lack of size and skill around the rim will haunt us in March. The tendency to have a game where we can't stop committing stupid turnovers is a concern as well.

Looking forward to the bounce back against LSU and then having a week off to refocus for the end stretch of the season.

Considering he was a skinny, #100ish ranked recruit from The Villages, he's actually contributed way more than i expected. Only reason he's gets was much playing time as he has is lack of front court depth. He's not good at D, but he's tall. So he's been asked to do more then he should've. Anyone mad at what he's done, or hasn't done, is unrealistic.

We'll never be able to dictate tempo in a Doug Shows officiated game.

Exactly, there was no way to gain momentum for a run in the second half because of the foul calls. It was fricking ludicrous. They call non fouls, fouls. And then didn't call other obvious fouls. It was an absolutely maddening game to watch.

The good thing about our last four wins in a row is that Stevenson was one of our best players. In particular, when we won against Auburn, Estrada scored 0 points, but Stevenson showed good defense and offense.

If Stevenson continues to show consistent performance in offense and defense like he showed during his 4th consecutive win, we will be able to win. But he is a young 18-year-old who reclassified, so I think he will have his ups and downs.

At least we need at least 1 or 2 of Stevenson, Dioubate, Walters, Wague, and Pringle to perform well to win.

Ultimately, defense travels but Alabama doesn’t have a good one. So we’re going to get torched in true road games against quality opponents.

Bediako made a huge mistake going pro and he and Alabama are both worse off for it. Alabama simply doesn’t have the rim protection to cope with this many mediocre defenders

Yeah, I'm not mad at him, I just hoped he be further along in terms of contributing and less of a defensive liability as we approach mid-February. Maybe those pre-season practice reports got my expectations too high.

All this to say we're still in a great spot, I just enjoy finding something to bitch about.

As others have said, Walters just isn't ready to get significant minutes in physical wars like last night or like Tennessee. He can't hold up. That's not his fault (or even an issue, really), but he's just not to that point yet.

Not sure why Nate had him in there so much other than he knew the way the game was playing out foul wise and thought he had to gamble some with his bench.
