I'm trying to figure out Hamas's overall goal here. Are they trying to accomplish something other than just killing people? Taking prisoners in hopes of a swap? Are they just doing what they are being told to do by other actors? How does the Hamas leadership see themselves or the Palestinian people benefiting from these attacks?
Or, am I trying to apply logical standards to illogical people?

Israel will break a lot of Iran’s toys. We ain’t gotta do shite except fly some recon and control missions. This movie has been made about a dozen times since ‘48.

Since it's inception, Hamas' long-term goal is to end the Jewish state and replace it with an Islamic one — i.e., the liberation (or return) of Palestine.
As for "why" in this instance, there is a seven-day Jewish pilgrimage holiday called Sukkot, which just ended on October 6/7. Festivities involved large-scale events on the compound of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, which is also the third holiest site for Muslims.
During this most recent holiday the Jews were praying in this mosque, which is typically not permitted and is considered to be a highly, highly provocative act.
Although the incursion as a whole has obviously been planned for some time (it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur war), the timing appears in part to be retaliation for that provocation, with Hamas saying that they're acting to "protect" Jerusalem.

Israel has been hit harder, though not quite so gruesomely, in the past.
It came as a shock to many in the world, but if you've been following Israeli politics there was kind of a sense that something like this could happen.
Netanyahu has been doing everything he can to stay in power, particularly since there is a really good chance he's heading to the slammer once he gets out of office as there appears to be quite a bit of evidence he's been up to shenanigans of a criminal nature.
Part of that was shuffling around important people in Mossad and the Israeli army. I know of quite a few Israeli pundits who have been saying for several months that Israel hadn't been so vulnerable since the Yom Kippur war. Given the reports coming out that Egypt suspected something was wrong and attempted to warn Netanyahu and were blown off...
What will we do about Hamas? We'll probably give the Israeli's some ammunition and stay out their way while trying to keep the conflict from spreading. Which has been our Modus Operandi in the Middle East for a long time.
A lot, and I do mean a lot, of Palestinians are going to die and probably quite few more Israelis. Oddly enough, while the massive failure of his government allowed this to happen in the short run it will probably strengthen Netanyahu's grip on power.

The end game are pipelines and Iranian oil reserves from the Saudi universe to Turkey. Period.
So the powers that be have already begun blaming Iran for this, the same as they trumped up BS on Assad in Syria. Whatever radicals there are related to Iran, we created them beginning in 1953, and never stopped poking them.
Pipeline/pipelines through Syria and the western border of Iran, from Saudi to Turkey. Plus Iran's oil. That's the game here. Plus Israel wants to keep slaughtering Palestinians as they've been doing for years. They want to throw tons of gas on that fire.
America/Great Britain/Saudi/Israel loves war and war money, and they create enemies to keep the money train rolling.
Ron Paul already said around a decade ago that Hamas was a creation of the powers that be. Just like ISIS was later.

Israel can handle this. They dont play by the same rules that most do - they dont ask questions or play silly games. They have one thing in mind - they are gonna make you pay with your life. End of story.
