We were living next door to this old Bama Grad and Bear Bryant's former pilot, so he a lot of inside information.
He told me that Shula was given an ultimatum, either fire you assistants or we are going to fire you.
Shula was loyal to a fault and wouldn't fire his assistants, so he was fired.
Shula's loyalty is obvious in that he came back to Bama to coach at a time when the wheels had fallen off. He deserves so much credit for righting the ship. He wasn't a great coach, but he did put us in a position that we could lure Saban to the Capstone. I am grateful for what he did as a coach and a player.

Oh boy, the Brodie Croyle years, he was never meant for Div 1 football. The 'Honk if you sacked Brodie' decals were everywhere after the 2003 IB.

Shula was always a stop gap coach to get Alabama through probation. He accomplished his goal and threw a nice season in there as well in 2005.
His deficiencies should be viewed in light of that he would’ve never had to be the guy if Alabama wouldn’t have made the mistake of hiring Price.
A side note, No school in the south should hire someone whose whole coaching reputation has been built in eastern Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. It’s gonna be a bad cultural fit.

Brodie Croyle was a very good QB and had a live arm. He just didn't have anyone blocking for him.

This is correct. That 2005 Alabama defense was very good and had some NFL talent at LB and in the secondary.

Auburn was much better than Al in 05-06.
Unfortunately the 2005 scoreboard doesn't reflect the arse whipping that happened on the field.
It is a shame Urban stole Tebow from him, he is a much better guy than that pos.

John Vaughn missed five field goals in Death Valley in 2005. If Auburn wins that game, they play Georgia in a rematch for the SEC championship and a trip to the Sugar Bowl (held in Atlanta).
They weren't going to play in the BCS national championship game over undefeated Tejas and SC, though.

The shame is that most Bama fans then, and even now, never realized the good he did for the team and the university. Fans gave him and his family plenty of hate and blamed him for the mess previous coaches and ADs brought on the school and the teams.

Not at all but I am not some blind Bammer that got mind farked by the narrative that only 3 former Bammer (Shula, Croom and Williamson) were the only guys that wanted the job. That was 100% false. The decision was made and phone calls from agents of more qualified candidates were not returned.
In 2003 Sheila inherited a team that went 10-2 the year before and had 14 starters coming back for the 2003 season. He went 4-9 with that squad.
In year 2 of the CNS era he won the west and went to the SECG with a team that had 18 former Sheila recruits as starters on it.
Sheila hired a horrible coaching staff and had plenty of talent to be successful he just didnt care enough to push or develop the players. Guys like Keith Brown and DJ Hall made fun of Sheila on the reg in front of the whole team.
2003-2006 was nothing but a soft, mis-managed country club

I have always had a super soft spot in my heart for all those post-Dubose teams. They really bled for us and, for my part, it seemed they had a lot of heart. Those were the years that truly forged my fandom as an adult. It has made 2007+ as sweet as sweet and low on a sugar cube.

Let me sum it up. You used a former player for a few years and tossed him aside like a piece of teash when his usefulness was no longer needed. What a loyal fanbase and admin you have.

This... the OL was atrocious. Croyle had more arm talent than McCarron or McElroy.

So we can add calling loyal former players losers (btw the only one willing to take the job under sanctions to his own coaching detriment) of course he didnt have the players your recruiting was hampered by aanctions for getting caught cheating. Auburn is right about one thing, most bama fans are t-shirt fans that never actually went to the school there. Proofs in their ignorant responses. Watch one of them point to bama's record against the hogs because that will prove you're not an ignorant inbred

Frachione went 10-2 in 2002 with the same players Sheila had in 2003 and Saban won the west in 2008 with 18 starters that were Sheila recruits.
Feel sorry for whoever you want the guy tried very hard not to be a winner. The AD even tried to throw him a life line saying he could keep his job if he made some staff changes and he refused.
You dont get your arse beat as the HC at Bammer 4 years in a row by your biggest rivals and get a contract extension. Just ask Bill Curry
