Using the same rankings that I put together for all-time, I went ahead and ran the same numbers for only since 2000. UConn's incredible success since 2000 gave me the idea, and at this point it's getting close to a quarter century since that year, so it made some sense.

> National Title - 150 points
> National Runner Up - 75 points
> Final Four Semifinal - 50 points
> Elite 8 - 25 points
> Sweet 16 - 15 points
> Round 32 - 10 points
> Round 68 - 5 points
> Conference Championship (Regular Season) - 12 points
> Conference Tournament Championship - 5 points
> Losing Season - (-5 pts)

The numbers shown are the total # of whatever that column is - not the points accrued. You just multiple the # there x the pt value above it to get the pt total.

Here is the historical rankings, for context

You’ve been to a Final Four in that timeframe so I’m not sure why that’s surprising.

It's always astounded me that we are such a bad basketball program historically. Basketball is a very popular sport in Mississippi, seems like everyone I grew up with either played on the high school team or pick-up at the church gym all the time. Hell, our baseball coaches sometimes let us play basketball during practice as a fun cardio workout. Throw in the fact that we have the Grizzlies to our north and the Pelicans to our southwest, and you've got a state that should be prime territory for college basketball.

Then again, we've not thrown significant money at basketball until the past 13 years (we built our basketball practice facility in 2010 and our new stadium in 2016), so I guess I shouldn't wonder why we suck so bad compared to other SEC programs.

The fact that SC has only been to the tournament 2 times since 2000 is pathetic.

Frank Martin was around for about half of those years. He took us once. Surely SC can find a coach to take us more than just once. I am hoping it is Lamont, but if not we can't give a guy 10 years

Which is why any semi-significant March accomplishment (Sweet 16 or beyond) is worth more than any single regular season accomplishment. A trip to the Sweet 16 > Regular Season Conference Title. An Elite 8 is 2x as valuable. A F4 trip and loss is almost 5x more valuable. Runner up 7x more valuable. National Title 14x more valuable.

Just making the tournament or winning 1 game and still losing in the first weekend, however, is not. And shouldn't be.

FYI - if the Conference Title/Tournament were removed

Since 2000

Since NCAAT started

And yet you have Texas ahead of UF.

I think they are tied, actually, but yea that gets into whether a great 5 year run and 40 years of nothing > 50 years of really good and non great run. I'd take the short great run and 50 years of nothing, but not everyone would.

And for the record, removing the small in-season point totals doesn't change Alabama's standing at all. Because none of this has to do with them and their standing. Figured that was clear, but I dunno.

It's amazing how back-to-back football titles will make you not give a rip.

Pretty sure everyone would take more titles and more Final Fours and more tournament wins.

They've only won 5 tournament games in their entire history.

If they are more recent, absolutely. Cincinnati won 2 national titles in 1961-1962 and went to 5 Final Fours from 1959-1963. They've been past the 1st weekend 2 times in the last 27 years and don't appear close to being a regular tournament program again soon.

Would they trade that to be Texas right now? I dunno, guess you'd have to ask them.

But that's why I think looking at it over periods of time is probably better because of how much basketball has changed in the last 50 years, led alone the last 25 or 30. It's hard to compare an era where a top 10 team that didn't win their league didn't get a chance at the national title to the current system in 2023 (and that was through the mid 1970s).
