Home game in Jacksonville? South Carolina dominates Gator Bowl ticket sales
Story by Dwayne Mclemore, The Charlotte Observer • 7h ago

quote:

Don’t adjust your TV screen if you’re watching Friday’s TaxSlayer Gator Bowl from home: That’s not South Carolina taking on Notre Dame at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl trophy is on display Thursday at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.

It might look like it, though, just based on the overwhelming ticket demand from the Gamecocks’ fan base.

South Carolina will account for more than 40,000 of the tickets sold for this year’s Gator Bowl, according to a Twitter post made by national college football writer Matt Hayes. TIAA Bank Field, home of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, has a capacity of 67,164.

The Gator Bowl is expecting around 65,000 fans for Friday’s game, bowl president and CEO Greg McGarity told reporters Thursday.

“It’s been incredible,” McGarity said of the Gamecocks’ demand for tickets. “They moved a significant amount of tickets. I think the vast majority (in the stadium) will be South Carolina fans.”

Credit that demand to an eight-win South Carolina season that finished with wins over Top 10 teams Tennessee and rival Clemson. It’s also the USC program’s first trip to Gator Bowl in 35 years and a relatively short drive for fans making the trip from the Palmetto State (about five hours).
quote:

According to a TIAA Bank Field graphical layout promoted by South Carolina, the university and the Gamecock Club sold tickets in 87 of the stadium’s 135 sections to Gamecock fans. By comparison, 16 sections are designated for Notre Dame supporters.

South Carolina even sold tickets in two sections the Fighting Irish fans were not using.

Seats sold through USC were either $125 (club), $100 (lower bowl) or $65 (upper bowl).

don't be surprised if Gamecock fans make it on the field at Gamecock Bowl for the 3rd straight game, either -

FootCOCKS! Oh My God.

ND has spent the week in my town, spending time at a resort hotel and practicing on our HS field. I’ve rarely seen any ND garb all week, so I’m not sure where their fans are.
I wanted to go to the game but I’m not paying $150 for a nose bleed seat.

It took me 7 and a half hours to get from Cola to Jacksonville today.

It took 4 and a half to get out of SC.

There were no major accidents and I didn’t have car trouble.

Our fan base broke the interstate getting down here.

Eta- the drive is suppose to be under 5 hours.

- SC & GA state highways were about the same. the group texts from our family/friends headed to Jax were quite colorful.

we've made Jax in just under 3 hours from Main/17 Johns Island more than a few times. didn't happen today - twice that and a little more for those that went.

We were moving at least. Didn’t have any issues on 95 after we went back roads through Savannah

#GoCocks! Y'all help us bring that trophy back home ... but I'm worried. We're short-handed thanks to the transfer portal and early-outs and, well, I'm worried.

It was three weeks ago today that they cracked my chest open and did a quadruple bypass. I walked three miles today, the last .7 up a steep hill. I'm not supposed-to be able to walk three miles for 13 weeks and I was told not to drink until after 12 March.

I'm walking another three miles in the morning ... and I'm drinking Blanton's beginning at 1500 hrs. Tomorrow is going-to-be a stressful afternoon either way.

What are we, 1-2 vs the Irish or 1-3? We need this win bigley.

Subtle I've never driven on south carolina's 2 lane version of 95.

What made you think that Rocky is either a Gamecock fan or resident of SC?

FWIW all of 95 is typically bad this week, during this time of the year, every year. It's holiday related and Florida bowls related.

My wife and I are usually on 95 going and coming between our place in Jupiter and here during the holidays ... the stretch between I-26 and South of Jacksonville is always iffy this time of year. Just depends, hit or miss.

Still not as bad as 75 through Georgia and down to Orlando though ... which is bad 24/7/365 especially when you get just south of Columbus.

What makes you think either is a requirement for observing a not so subtle change at the state line? I'm not a gamecock fan nor resident of south carolina. Pretty sure rocky lives in my area, which coincidentally would be where y'all are driving for the game. So, safe travels and have a good time

Rooster it's good to see you around here again. that's quite an eventful December you've had. all the best on your recovery - and I'll be the last Gamecock to tell ya you shouldn't have Blanton's until March 12.

hopefully after all the 'heart upgrades' the Dr's helped install - you feel more energetic and lively than you have in some time. you've walked more in 1 or 2 days now than I have since Thanksgiving be it working/other. be well - as always - Go Cocks!
