The real answer as to which school is better is: the school that is right for you individually

Agreed.

But the state of Georgia basically splits into 2 groups. Engineering and everything else.
For undergrad, it is GIT for engineering and UGA for everything else as the primary option for the vast majority of students.

Some kids will take their 529s to Emory. Some kids will go ivy. My son wants a degree from Middle Tennessee State. But first 2 years would be in state. So it was a choice of UGA or KSU. He was lazy and only applied to KSU, Georgia State, and UNG (no essay on the application). He is below the median in every UGA freshman category, but we are a small, poor county and he would potentially fit the "under" category for admissions.

I agree. But UGA is pulling a higher caliber student and faculty. Engineering is a great degree at Auburn. Much better than at Georgia. But not better than GIT. The OPs Atlanta argument holds true even for engineers.

Negative, see below.

They weren't smart enough to get into UGA or Georgia Tech

Kids who are “smart enough” to get into UGA might choose AU in spite of how much more it would cost financially. Georgia Tech isn’t a remotely comparable institution to UGA. OP was trying to offend AU fans and it flopped once people presented facts into the thread.

The reality is - for kids in GA there’s one “normal SEC school”, UGA - serving a large state population. In Alabama there are two schools, with a lower state pop. Therefore more kids are competing for in state tuition. Surprising how close the incoming test scores are given that large discrepancy. Nice that more kids in Alabama can get a great education and take advantage of in state tuition.
