I don't for one second believe that "people writing emails" is a real thing that actually influenced a decision.
If Freeze was going to be the guy he would have just been hired.
The fact that it was leaked very early and then just left to sit there under radio silence highly suggests to me that it was leaked by Cohen himself... because that's not who he wants to hire.
This is a Roberts and Cohen hire. I do not imagine either of those two seriously wanting to hire Freeze. This has been a strong sentiment from the very beginning of this search.
