just read about this in the latest issue of Auburn Alumnews:
Bestselling Author Tim Dorsey (1961-2023)
friend of mine during our AU days, he was at the Plainsman while I was at WEGL
caught up with him in Pcola on a couple of his book tours over the years, great guy who wrote 26 comically violent novels
apparently he’d been seriously ill since 2020 and passed away around Thanksgiving last year

Does WEGL no longer exist?
As far as I know it is still going strong. At least it was when I graduated in 2004.
Wanna know how to piss off someone who works at WEGL? Refer to it as "Wee-guhl." They will (or would) quickly correct you - "It's W E G L."

I’ve been a big fan of Tim Dorsey’s novels for a LONG time. I became an even bigger fan after I found out he was a fellow Auburn alum.
I can’t remember the exact source of the actual review of one of his books, but the the reviewer used the phrase: “a Carl Hiassen novel on steroids” to describe Dorsey’s work.
I’m also a big fan of Carl Hiassen, and having read nearly every one of their combined works, I’d say that’s a pretty fair assessment.
Not at ALL to imply that Dorsey was a Hiassen copy-cat by any measure.
Two of my favorite contemporary fictional re-occurring characters are Hiaasen’s - Clinton Tyree…aka “Skink”…aka “the Governor” and Dorsey’s - Serge Storms

I first reconnected with Tim at a book signing in Pensacola in the early 2000s when I brought him a copy of one of his short stories in The Auburn Circle (AU’s student literary mag) to autograph (he got a big laugh out of it)
he was a very interesting guy with a great sense of humor, but he was absolutely nothing like you would expect from reading his stuff. very low-key, mild-mannered. I remember him fretting over a dad carrying his daughter on his shoulders out the door of the bookstore because he thought he was going to hit her head on the top of the door.
I hadnt caught up with him in a decade or so, hearing he had died was a bit of a shock
