I agree. OMac was deadly on them. It appears this kid is even faster.

Some of y'all need to chill with this Anthony Swartz need to focus on track only. He has a chance to be a really unique weapon at WR and I'm excited to watch him run some speed sweeps.

His life, YOLO and all. Just not sure I’d play a contact sport if I were one of the fastest humans on the planet

If you're one of the two guys the public knows. Being on the bench of an NFL team pays more than being the 10th best sprinter.

That’s assuming he’s also an elite college football player capable of earning NFL dough.

We don’t have to assume he’s good enough to compete for gold medals.

I agree, chances are higher he would be a top sprinter, but if you don't end up at the top and just end up being a really good sprinter there's no money and even less fame. Basically, what I'm saying is, being the worst NFL player pays better than being a good sprinter.

With his speed he doesn't need to be an elite player.. JF3 got camp invites and did nothing in college. His speed got him looks. If Schwartz has even a decent college career he will get an opportunity. Plus if football doesn't work out after a few years he can go back to track.

I just hope that the Auburn track and field coach sent Gus a REALLY HUGE gift basket for landing this guy.

Your logic makes no sense. "The worst NFL player" is out of the league in ~2-3 years tops. You seem to be describing a situation wherein he's bad at football but somehow spends 10+ years riding the bench in the NFL. That doesn't happen LOL. There is no shortage of track-star wideouts in the NFL; if he can't play his spot isn't somehow guaranteed because he's fast on the track (no one has even seen how his speed translated to the football field yet).

When it comes to Olympic sports, very few athletes make big bucks. Research from the Track & Field Athletes Association found that roughly half of the athletes who ranked top 10 in the U.S. in their events made less than $15,000 a year from the sport. Very few are making millions
5 Top-Grossing Olympic Athletes

Minimum salary in the NFL this year is 480k. 2 or 3 years of that is better than a career as an average sprinter. Unless you are the elite of the elite there just isn't that much money in track. Could he be that good? Maybe, but if he is I doubt trying football for a few years will hurt him much barring injury.

But now I'm the one derailing the thread lol.

It might be a better comparison to look at a 10 year average earnings of...

4 star high school WR (all earnings...the guys pumping gas, coaching in high school and playing in the NFL)

Top 2 or 3 under 20 sprinters

I suspect the average salary might lean toward the top sprinters vs the gamble of going from a good high school talent to an NFL player. The NFL clearly has the higher ceiling, but I doubt many top sprinters don't at least make some good checks for a few years.

This isn't just about sprinters, but here's another article and a quote from it.
quote:

What about Kind Butler III? He is a world record-holder, too, albeit in a relay. The Indianapolis sprinter estimated his 2013 earnings from track: $6,000, or about 4,000 times less than Bolt.
Pro track athletes make as little as $5,000

It's a few years old so I'm sure the money has gone up some, but it's extremely hard to make money in track. It can be done obviously and sprinters do make the most money.

It’s still a stretch to assume he will make an opening day NFL roster. Regardless, I’m guessing his aspirations and his own interests play a role in his endeavors. If his sights are on the track, he should go for it. He won’t make a ton of money including the prize money and a few endorsements, but money may not factor into his journey to internal satisfaction.

My wife was an English instructor at AU during that era. Pugh was by far her favorite student-athlete. Emphasis on student.

I vote he runs track at Auburn, plays football at Auburn and gets his degree from Auburn. As long as he represents the university well and gets to do what he loves to do, I’m happy, though.

Would really love to see him on a jet sweep with a lane...

Encouraging update from KN on 4* DL Jaren Handy. He's the one guy that makes me most nervous about eventually flipping. Told KN says he's 100% solid to AU & that he feels comfortable at Auburn. Also really likes fact he will have chance to play early. Talks with Marcus Woodson every day but most of their conversations have nothing to do with football. Does plan on taking his official visits this fall (not a surprise). But probably the most important thing is he's actively recruiting for AU. He said this about 4* Buck Derick Hall & 4* DL Charles Moore who he's recruiting hard to join him at AU
quote:

“I’ve been talking to Charles every day and Derick every day,” Handy said. “I think when we get them, we’ll be straight. When we get them — not if.”

Says likes chances with Hall more than Moore, that Moore is gonna be a tough pull but thinks AU will in the end get him. Not sure if he's gonna visit July 28th but doesn't have any future visits set right now

Pickens & Handy are the 2 guys to keep an eye on in terms of possibly flipping. But what stands out is both are actively recruiting for AU right now. That's usually a really good sign. I think both end up at AU but they will be the two that make me nervous before signing

Funny enough, not really worried about Pappoe unless we just completely crap the bed this season
