Rylan Griffen
Ht: 6-6Wt: 190
Griffen is a plug-and-play wing because of his ability to shoot the ball. He made 74 3s this season at a 39.2 percent clip. He’s elite as a spot-up shooter. The release is quick and high. He can also make shots off the move, but most of his 3s come off spot-ups. He’s limited as an athlete but seems to realize his limitations and play to his strengths. He almost always plays off two feet and still shoots it well at the rim, helped by his size. He shot 64.3 percent at the rim, per Synergy. He’s right-handed dominant — so he usually drives right — and not the type to shake defenders off the bounce. Most of his points come on jumpers. Go behind a dribble handoff or ball screen, and he’s pulling it. He shot more 3s (189) than 2s (102). He’s been well-schooled in how to play efficient basketball, hunting 3s and being willing to make the extra pass if the shot isn’t there for him. He made eight 3s in the Sweet 16 game against North Carolina and then followed that up with eight assists in the Elite Eight against Clemson. This is a surprising one because he’s such a good fit in Alabama’s system and started 33 games this season. — C.J. Moore

I don't know why he's leaving since he s a perfect fit.

I thought it was funny that a national guy even said, "why the hell out he leaving? He was a perfect fit."
But Kansas must've put some crazy figures in his head, that Oats felt was overpaying. And maybe there's personality conflicts that we haven't heard about. Only thing we do know for sure, is there'd been whispers for a long time.

Re: Pollard
Didn’t his Mom get into trouble with the law right after his enrollment here? She kidnapped someone’ s child it was said, May have been other charges too. That’s enough to mess up anyone’s season.

I would like to know how he did that, he only scored 19 pts

No word of him being an "elite" defender?

Ha! Your right: I think 5 (3's), 1 (2), and 2 FT's (not 8 3's)

Doesn't say he's black either. Some things you can just see, or you can't.

Of course. More brilliant analysis from G.Swashy.
What do you think of the comments about his athletic limitations?

Played basketball my entire life and followed it my entire life, yet do not know basketball the way some of you know basketball and fotr that alone I am very appreciative of the Alabama Sports Board. That being said, I was very surprised at the beginning of the year with how out-of-sync Griffen was on the court. He looked so lost... then mid season he demonstrated super talent for his position. When to shoot, when to pass, when to dribble.... defensive prowess seems to be for only a select few based on either or all of speed, size, determination, basketball IQ.. etc. I also struggled throughout the year with how we rebounded.. much better as with defense in general towards the end of the season. Earlier I felt like we were just soft... get mean, get angry, BLOCK OUT! Either way, hope this becomes the soul of Alabama basketball next year... It is why I picked (unfortunately) Houston in the finals

Oh, I've been convinced. Griff was the worst defender on the team. Perhaps Griff was the worst defender ever to don the BAMA uniform.
I can't believe Oats played him at all. It's definitely strike one and two. I'm very close to starting "firenateoats.com" in the wake of his horrible decision to constantly play BAMA's worst defender night-in and night-out.

Oats taking a kid Bruce failed with and being successful with him would break the Barners…..or at least what is left of them after we made the Final 4

Hi Swashbuckler,
Can you give certain instances where this was the case and maybe select highlights from Youtube or another site. I may have been so caught up in the game as a whole and others struggling at times with defense that I didn't recognize the significant disparity between Rylan's defense and the other players.
This article suggests outside of his NBA potential offense, he demonstrates NBA potential for defense too. Just curious about your take.

I just want to say that a player like Griffin is worth different amounts for different teams. Every player in the portal has a different value for every major school. Just because a player leaves it doesn't automatically mean the school that gets him has deeper pockets. It may just means that he has greater utility for that school at this particular time.
My understanding is that oats has been working with slightly under 3 million in annual NIL. Big Boy... blue blood money is considered to be 5 million. When Kentucky approached Oats, there were discussions about NIL and assistant coaching salaries. One assurance that was made was bumping NIL into that top tier category.
But regardless of your NIL, you have to optimize your spending. It may make more sense to double up on a Sears than spend on Griffin. It may make sense to reserve more for a Grant Nelson, who flashed in the tournament and may ultimately be great.
You can't just try to hold onto everyone.
I sleep good knowing that massive fireworks are shooting off in that big Nate Oats cranium. He's optimizing all this and I'm sleeping well.
Bama's final four and Nate Oats dramatic show of loyalty to the University has really supercharged the program. We're going to do what we have to do.

Yup. And she made Devonta drive the getaway car. Strange family. Devonta himself was awkward and a bit of an odd bird. His twitter account mostly consisted of retweeting and commenting on porn accounts as if his account wasn't open to the public

Sounding like we got Holloway, should be an announcement tomorrow.
Posted on 4/18/24 at 8:34 pm to TheNameIsDalton
Looks like there are rumors of us potentially landing Sean Pedulla out of nowhere. I thought landing Holloway made me skeptical Sears would return. Landing both makes me think it's a sure thing he's gone.
Edit: This would be huge if true and 2 huge consolation prizes, but I'd be heartbroken knowing it very likely means Sears won't be back.
