Can we also just marvel for a minute on what a great feel Oats has for his offense and how to counter defensive strategies against it? Maryland had a great strategy to switch everything, keep themselves in front of us, take away the 3 pt line and make us make shots at the rim with a body on us. But.......the only way they could do that was with a bunch of 6-4 to 6-6 guys who were long but were not super quick. So how does Oats adjust? Basically runs 4 out with Bediako running interference or 5 out when Bediako isn't in the game. Floor opens up, we get more shots at the rim and more open looks outside and we draw more fouls.

1st half
- 28 pts
- 14% 3pt FG (1/7)
- 47% 2pt FG (9/19)
- 9 free throws (made 7)

2nd half
- 45 pts
- 36% 3pt FG (5/14)
- 44% 2pt FG (8/18)
- 18 free throws (made 14)

Similar tale against Auburn and Arkansas. You can scheme us for a half, but you better be prepared for a counter because it will not last.

I don't really think that outside of Plavsic sometimes that they play dirty, really. They just play very, very physical with big, strong dudes

My biggest issue is not really inside the lane. A lot of teams are physical around the rim. It's the constant grabbing and holding on ball handlers and cutters. They do it constantly and dare the officials to call it. If they ever get a crew that does, you'll see that great defensive team ranking go down the toilet. It's like playing football at Auburn and wonder why your passing yards are so bad. It's because they hold the receivers the whole game and get away with it. It's fricking infuriating.

Plavsic is dirty as frick. He literally assaulted Kyle Pilipowski the other day and the officials did call him for a flagrant foul. Insane.

Yeah he's the main one IMO. He literally was in the post with his back turned to Filiposwki, turned and ran at him and pushed him to the ground.

Oh I agree - it's how they play and they require a very specific type of whistle to play their game, which I why I am not nearly as "easy road to the Final Four for Tennessee!" as a lot of people seem to be. If they get what is a "usual" tournament whistle in either of the next 2 games they could absolutely lose.

But I don't think any of it is dirty (outside of some of the stuff Plavsic does, he definitely has a little 1980s Pistons in him).

Astute analysis and tremendous coaching acumen right here

It is just the facts of basketball. My dad was a high school basketball coach. Some of you may know the school, Paramount. We were 2A before the combined Eutaw and Paramount and made Greene County High. Before they had the Final Four in Bham, 2A, 4A, and 6A played in the Elite Eight in Auburn. Paramount was there for 5 years straight from 87 - 91. We lost in the championship in 1990 to Francis Marion.

I'm saying all that to say this, my dad was successful because that is all he preached and coached on. Play great defense, control the boards, hit your free throws and be fundamentally sound with the basketball. If you look at our (Bama) success this season, you'll see that we did those things, especially in SEC play.

I think that's been the biggest growth I've seen over last season. Of course, it helps to have some of these freshmen that we have, but the adjustments have been noticeable. What he did when teams started face guarding Miller was nice and very effective.

It's just beautiful. Like you said, it makes it much easier to have a bunch of good players who can execute it, but we make very clear adjustments to how smart teams with good coaches decide to defend us and they almost always work.

yea, it's just smart to do if the officials will allow it.

The other big thing that drives me insane is what Timme gets away with. The hooks, travels and going through guys from behind are over the top and he somehow almost never fouls out. He's very effective and "crafty" but I hate watching what he gets away with. I hope he enjoys playing college ball because the next level won't be so agreeable for him. He's a 6'10" guy that won't be able to take guys off the dribble, bad 3pt shooter (13% this season) and won't be able to muscle the NBA guys inside like he does now.

Yeah I can't stand Timme. He's a prima donna that the officials let do whatever he wants. I hope that Gonzaga dosen't make it to the Final Four because the media will be rooting for them to finally get over the hump. Mark Few has never won a national championship and I have a gut feeling that people will want them to finish the job this year.

St. John's won't be able to prove the cause they are claiming. It will end up costing them more in the end. Should have just paid him after letting him go.

Princeton over FAU? Interesting

I 100% would rather play FAU than Princeton right now. Princeton has been absolutely dicing up defenses, and have been playing great fundamental defense thus far. I don't pretend to know why they struggled in the regular season, but they have been one of the better looking teams in the tournament thus far.

Having the players translates to regular season success. Being able to win the tactical chess match against the coach on the other bench translates to postseason success. Gotta have both to win rings and hang banners.

1-8 in the Sweet 16 and last appearance was an OT loss while shooting 11/25 from the free throw line. So yeah not a curse just really really bad.

Free throws have killed many of our runs in the NCAA tournament throughout our basketball history.
Two years ago we were a good FT shooting team but inexplicably couldn’t hit anything against UCLA.
