I'm not trying to tell people this whole thing is gonna go awesome - I legitimately have no idea. I'm just not sure what people expected when the Saban era ended, especially when we made the decision to hire somebody outside of the "family tree".

And I'm not sure how any of it should effect whether you keep watching Alabama play sports if you love the University.

No one has asked you to post the percentage of whether or not this hire is going to be considered a success.

This board has lost the plot. Mods are bailing on the program. Shut it down.

I have to believe that many of these posters just are not old enough to understand how lucky we were to have Saban at UA and for 17 years.

Before Saban we only had 10 seasons of 10 wins or more since Bear.(27 years) Two of those due to sanctions became void. In Saban's second year was the first season since 1980 UA was ranked #1 in the regular season poll. He followed what 10 years of the school being on probation with many of those years with reduced scholarships.

Deboer and staff have it easy compared to what Saban had. Not expecting anyone to repeat what Saban was able to do but we should still be a contender and reach the playoffs every year. Just might have to work a little harder for it.

Man. This is totally different compared to when Saban came in as the new coach after everything from the first half of the 2000s with sanctions and coaching changes. Of course that textbook stuff was crap.

I sorta did. Not Texas or even A&M style but I thought our bank account was pretty frickin' hefty.

Call me crazy, but I've always felt like the main thing that differentiates college from the NFL is the idea that there is some sort of shared experience and connection between the fans and the players. Maybe that's just because I went to school at Alabama and met a lot of them in class, at parties, out on the Strip, or whatever. I'm never going to be the social peer of an NFL player though. I'm never going to sit next to any of them in a class. So that common experience is just never going to exist.

I do agree that the people acting like we're about to return to the Dubose era are nuts, but I can't blame anyone who is ready to cut back their emotional investment in a sport that is rapidly becoming NFL Lite if pro sports aren't their thing.

I don't disagree with that, but timing that up with "we won't be as good now" is a bit convenient, no?

Also, let's be frank, nobody is actually going to stop watching this shite. RollTide1987 will be back on here after we put 63 on Western Kentucky telling us how excited he is.

Convenient might not be the word I'd use. I think Saban shielded a lot of our fans from the reality of a lot of the problems with modern college sports and now that the mask has been suddenly and unexpectedly ripped off they're all freaking out about it. I've been expressing some concerns about this stuff for a while, so at this point I feel like I'm just beating a dead horse, but I do genuinely think it has caught a bunch of people by surprise.

Oh for sure. He's a FOG shithead whose life will lose all meaning without Alabama football.

I wonder who was around when Alabama went 4-7 in 97’

I signed with Alabama after that stellar season hysterically, it was because of the fan support during a less than stellar time.

I’m not mad because he’s leaving per se, I’m mad at the contribution and time I’ve given and it still happening. I’m not the average fan or idle tv watcher. This is literally the only place I can vent about it. I can’t on any social media, not that I would, and I can’t to everyone involved. So it’s you guys I’m coming too. Luckily I’m over it now, had the best burger in town, and decided not to let it ruin my day. No matter what I’m Tide so it doesn’t matter. Anyone who says they are quitting the school completely needs a head check.

I think expectations have been destroyed by the portal window. We're the first blueblood program to get screwed by the immediate 30 day window opening. Anybody who thought there wouldn't be changes or pain when Saban retired was deluding themselves. Every reasonable person probably expected to see recruiting to dip. But I don't think anybody expected to see the immediate wholesale dismantling of the team due to the portal.

This 30 day window is ridiculous. I'm fine with letter the kids transfer out, but they already have that opportunity with the spring portal. The immediate 30 day window lets kids make knee-jerk reactions and lets opposing teams play upon the uncertainty that those players are experiencing.

After seeing what’s happening, I’m dumbfounded that Alabama didnt have a better plan.

It’s the Wild West out here and we had zero plan, even though the coaching search went really well.

You simply have to pony up and keep a select few core players in times like this. If Downs, Bond, and pick about 4 others are in on things from the very start of this and the messaging is positive and leadership is on the same page, there’s no way it reaches this chaotic point.

Paying some HS kid millions in hopes he pans out is a far cry from having a fricking plan and paying your guys to keep the program pointed in the right direction.

We had no plan and now it’s uncertain if we have a functioning football team Idk if I can be convinced that it has to be this way.

You know how firms are hired to help out during mergers and shite? How does a program like Alabama not have something like that in place for HC departures nowadays?

Did they even halfway ponder if it was the worst possible time for Saban to step down?
