The American Conference championship game is on December 6. It could easily be Army vs. Navy. If Boise loses another game and Army and Navy win out, the winner will be in line to advance to the playoffs.
But, not so fast. In a real scheduling oddity, the traditional, regularly scheduled Army-Navy game will be the following Saturday, Dec. 14...one week after they play in the conference championship game. The conference champion will likely have to win this game to hang on to their spot in the CFP.
Two Army-Navy games, on back to back weekends...and this time they actually mean something to the rest of the college football world...a chance to advance to the CFP...bumping out the 12th ranked team, probably an SEC team.
How crazy is that?

I didn't either until I started checking the rankings this morning to see who might be the 5th auto bid and saw them sitting there at #23 and 24. Boise needs to lose...which is possible. Navy has Tulane left to play. The craziest thing is that the regularly scheduled A/N game is the week after the conference champion. But it won't at all be meaningless...the conference winner will still probably need to win again to stay ahead of Boise.

I don’t think this is true. I think the playoff will be selected before the official Army-Navy game.

Yes. I stand corrected. Again...a very strange situation.
Just the spectacle of Army and Navy playing for a shot in the playoffs. Unreal.

I thought there was a guaranteed spot for a Group of 5 team. Thus, they would not be bumping out a power 4 team, merely tsking the spot alloted to them

Yes, this is the 5th guaranteed spot and will knock out the 12th ranked team overall is most seasons. It's likely that one of the top 4 "Power 4" teams will also knock out a top 12 team in most seasons, so we're likely to end up with at least 2 extremely lackluster first round matchups in most years.
