We've had some great ones in the past. From Don Hutson back in the 30s, to Ray Perkins in the 60s, David Palmer in the 90s, and more recently Julio Jones and Amari Cooper. However, I don't think any of them can compare to what DeVonta Smith accomplished in his four years at Alabama. You can definitely argue that some of the aforementioned names were more talented than Smith, but the numbers he put up were just incredible.

- 2020 Walter Camp Award winner
- 2020 Maxwell Award winner

Playing receiver is so much easier now than even a decade again, I don’t think you can really compare.

You can even see safeties pull up in a modern football. It makes it near impossible to cover the middle of the field. Even yesterday, there were two occasions Young put in good completions deep middle that would’ve been dislodged pre-targeting.

Numbers and trophies wise he probably is. But Julio Jones is the most important recruit and player in the history of Alabama football in my opinion.

I have seen bigger receivers, I have seen faster receivers but I am not sure I have seen better. Smith is going to ball in the pros and so is Waddle.

Heisman? Devonta
Stats? Devonta
2&26? Devonta

It’s not even very close after last season.

I mean he has an argument as the most accomplished WR of all time in all of college football, not just Bama history.

Yeah I'd say winning a Heisman at WR on top of everything else he did has him lapping the field.

Yes, he's the GOAT. 2 championships and a key player in both. 4 years of balling out. Heisman Trophy.

If I'm building a team from scratch, though, I still pick Julio Jones. I agree with the sentiment: he's the most important recruit of the Saban era and perhaps forever. He was the first "big time" recruit, he changed the culture at the position, etc.

Julio would have feasted in last year's offense.

I agree Smith has to be considered the college GOAT WR because of his accomplishments, but Julio was easily the most important and impactful recruit of the Saban era... just a completely different offense.

And the perception of a player is always affected by how they do in the NFL. Julio will be a HOF... probably one of the 3 greatest WRs in NFL history when he's done. Smith needs to at least become a Pro Bowler to be in Julio's company perception wise.

Not sure who would even come close to that resume.

Devonta Smith is the most accomplished wide receiver in college football history.

Short answer: yes he is.

That said, I’d love to see what Julio could do in our modern offense. It really wouldn’t have been fair.

Smitty had Tua and Mac throwing to him

Julio had JPW and and McElroy

But yeah, Julio in our offense today would be incredible. Totally different philosophy today.

When it comes to hands, its not even close. If the ball was anywhere near Smitty, it was a huge disappointment if he didn't catch it. This stood out to me at the A-day game, there were a few big drops that we haven't really seen the past few years. Smitty had the best hands of any receiver we have ever had, and huge play making ability to top it off.

He was definitely on the receiving end of the biggest pass play in college football history. 2nd and 26 in OT for the NC...it can't get bigger than that.

What a career he had... from that play to the Heisman and another NC. No WR will ever match his college career. Period.
